Skord's Charizard and Talonflame carried he and the injured Hiker to safety. They collapsed upon landing at Motostoke Hospital. The attack was on the news. Once Fayiz identified him, Abbey called Michael who called Skord's mom, Ivyra. She took the red-eye flight from Phenac to Motostoke. A greying blue hair clung to Skord's striped t-shirt. Scowling Ivyra surveyed it with trembling hands as she held it up to the light.
'Ardos... you bastard.'
Skord was groggy after his head was stitched back together. Rosen's lack of control saved him. If the blow had been a few centimetres lower, he would have died. He escaped with a severe concussion and fractured skull. The Hiker's injuries were more serious.
'Mom... what are we gonna do...? They escaped... they got to Orre... I couldn't stop them...'
'That's the last thing you need to worry about, Skord.'
'You must go... help dad and Rezar... and Lumir.'
'No way. I'm staying until you recover. Besides...'
She nodded to Abbey, standing with distraught Fayiz. 'Abbey and her friend Victor are going back. They're battle facility bosses. They're even stronger than I am.'
'Then you must go, Abbey... don't worry about me.'
There was nothing more they could do for Skord and Ivyra. They returned to Kabu's house. It was empty. Everyone staying there was out looking for the remaining Cipher members and Shadow Pokémon. A car pulled up outside. Abbey peered around the curtains. Victor waved.
'Mum...'
'I'll stay if you need me to, Fayiz. Dad will be alright.'
'It's not that...'
His distress was hardened by determination. 'I know my duty is to Galar... but Inteleon matters more and they've got him. And you matter more. Dad matters more. Amber matters more. I've got to go. In fact, you can't stop me. I've got my own money.'
Abbey sighed. If she confiscated his debit card, he could book his flight online. She could take his passport... but even without Inteleon, he was probably stronger than her or Leon. He'd only get it back. If Alfie and friends could get through airport security, there was no point in asking them or the International Police to stop Fayiz. Plus... Leon would be overjoyed to see him.
'Yeah... I think we all know we can't stop you by now. So shall we go together?'
'I'd like that... but all I've got with me is this camping stuff. When's your flight? Can I book it and catch up?'
'It's in about four hours. You're meant to arrive three hours in advance...'
She winked. 'But I bet they'll make an exception for the unbeatable Champion. I also know the pilot.'
'I think Moltres can get to Wyndon and back in an hour, anyway.'
'You're not taking Moltres with your wrist like that. I'm calling you a Flying Taxi.'
She hugged him tight before climbing into Victor's car. It almost made her teary-eyed again when he hugged her as tightly back.
'I love you, Fayiz.'
'Love you too.'
Airport security thoroughly searched everyone. Pokémon were released and passed through an Aura Reader. Even flight staff were subject to extended checks. Abbey panicked until she saw Fayiz rolling his Ice Face suitcase to the gate. He changed from his uniform and cape to a blue leather jacket and jeans. They were a little too small. He'd had that suitcase since he was eight. Like his father at 13, he was simultaneously trapped at the age he became Champion and older than his years.
