As I made my way to the Great Hall, the unsettling feeling in my stomach began to grow. I couldn't stop thinking about what Malfoy would possibly want to talk about with me. But what was I so nervous for anyway?
I guess I'd been walking pretty slowly because, when I finally made it to dinner, the Slytherin tables were already crowded with students. Thankfully, I saw Blaise waving at me, motioning for me to sit next to him.
I'd gotten to know Blaise pretty well over the past four years at Hogwarts. He tended to spend most of his time with Malfoy's group, but I found him to be the only nice one out of that whole lot. He was smirking at me when I settled down beside him.
"What took you so long, Y/L/N? Didn't you leave Potions before I did?" he questioned, reaching for the potatoes.
"Oh, right. I, uh, went the Owlery before coming down here."
"Well, you're lucky I saved you a seat. Otherwise, Pansy over there would've tried to squeeze herself next to me."
From across the table, Pansy glared annoyingly at Blaise, but he just laughed it off. I couldn't help but laugh along with him.
Even though I still felt nauseous, I didn't want Blaise to think that something was off about me, and I most certainly didn't want him finding out about my plans to meet Malfoy. I grabbed a piece of roast chicken off of the silver platter in front of me and took a small bite. I couldn't really stomach the rest, so I just poked at it with my fork while looking around to see if Malfoy was sitting nearby.
He was wedged between Crabbe and Goyle, and it seemed like Crabbe was going on about something boring because I heard Goyle groan and tell him to shut it. Malfoy rolled his eyes in disdain and ended up staring in my direction. We locked eyes for a moment.
My eyes widened, but I quickly looked down and pretended to be engrossed by the half-eaten piece of chicken on my plate.
Fortunately, Blaise turned from his conversation with Flint and asked me about the Potions assignment Snape had been explaining towards the end of class. I scoffed at him and teased, "What's going on, Blaise? It's not like you to stay on top of your assignments."
"Oh, fuck off, Y/L/N," he muttered, as he nudged me playfully. "I was just wondering if you wanted to look it over after dinner or something? I've got Quidditch practice this weekend so I should probably get a head start on it."
"Sure, sounds gre-," I started, but suddenly remembered that I had other plans tonight, "Actually, can we work on it tomorrow morning or after practice? It's the first week back. I feel like taking the night off."
He raised an eyebrow at me, but before he could say anything else, I interrupted with a smile, "Oh, come on. It's not like you were really going to start working on it tonight. Besides, didn't you say you were going to that party tonight?"
"Yeah, you know me too well, Y/L/N," he replied with a smirk. "You sure you don't want to come along tonight? It'll be fun! When's the last time we got absolutely wasted together?"
"Ha-ha, very funny, Blaise. But I think I'll have to pass."
"I wish you'd change your mind, Y/L/N. Like you said, it's our first week back! Unwind a little!"
"Alright, alright. I'll think about it."
This answer seemed to satisfy him for now. He slung his arm around me and gave me little shake. Maybe he was right; maybe I just needed to unwind.
It wasn't until I looked up that I realized Malfoy had been staring in my direction the entire time.
