The hallways were pretty much empty; the walls were only visible from the glowing fire of the sconces. There weren't many other students wandering the halls this late into the night, but there were the scarce latecomers like me who were all making there way down to the party.
The basement level of Hogwarts was seldom visited and only utilized when these "secret" parties were thrown. I say "secret" because I was sure the professors knew what was going on, but they'd rather turn a blind eye than go through the trouble of punishing every student in attendance.
As I approached the entranceway, I noticed that there were a couple of people waiting outside. It's not like these parties were exclusive in any way, but there were the occasional second- or third- years who tried to talk their way in. I gently made my way through the crowd of students attempting to convince the two Gryffindor sixth-years guarding the door. When I looked up at one of them, he winked at me and signaled me to head inside. I nodded in appreciation and walked through the threshold while trying to hide the fact that I was blushing.
Once inside, it felt like an entirely different atmosphere. The music suddenly began pounding in my ears the moment I stepped through the entrance. Someone must've cast a silencing charm because there was no way you couldn't hear the music without one.
Like always, there was a space designated for dancing. Crowds of pulsing and gyrating bodies were closely packed onto the elevated circular dance floor that seemed to be changing colors to the beat of the music. Colorful lights were flashing from all different directions in bursts of red, green, yellow, and blue, but it was still dark enough to cease all inhibitions.
I headed towards the back wall of the room, while still scanning through the sea of intoxicated beings, hoping to see a familiar face. There was what seemed to resemble a bar at the back corner — a long rectangular table faced parallel to the towering wall of liquor that reflected the vibrant colors from the lights. A couple of fifth-years boys were busy pouring shots for everyone. I squeezed my way in to grab one for myself before stepping to the side to catch my breath.
As I leaned against the wall with my fingers clasped around my single shot of firewhisky, I spotted Blaise making his way towards me through the crowd.
"HEY! You made it!" He slurred while pulling me in for a hug. With my face near his neck, I breathed in a heavy stench of firewhisky.
"Merlin's beard," I coughed while pinching my nose. "Has anyone else gotten a chance to drink yet, or are you just hogging all the alcohol for yourself tonight?"
"Happy first week of school, Y/L/N! He exclaimed with his hand clasped around a bottle of firewhisky. "Now DRINK!"
I smirked at him as I clinked my small shot of liquor to his large handle before downing my first drink of the night. I scrunched up my nose and tightly shut my eyes for a moment. I could feel the alcohol burning its way down my throat through my chest, before settling in my stomach. Before I could gather myself together, Blaise was already pouring more into my glass.
We downed at least four or five shots together. I could feel my nerves melting away. The music seemed to ring louder in my ears now, drowning every thought in my head. I closed my eyes as I began to feel the rhythm of the music, to feel the booming bass pulse through my veins.
Suddenly, I felt warm and slender fingers wrap around my wrist. My eyes flickered open and I saw Luna pulling me towards her for a hug.
"Y/N! I'm so glad to see you here!"
"Oh, Luna! I was hoping to see you around tonight!"
She introduced to me to one of her Ravenclaw friends and, after exchanging pleasantries, pulled us both to the dance floor.
At this point in the night, I was finally starting to feel myself unwind. I felt my smile widen as I danced alongside Luna. I watched as the lights from the dance floor lit up everyone's faces. I was happy to be at Hogwarts again, and this was the perfect way to be celebrating my return.
My fingers were interlocked with Luna's as we danced with each other. While swaying to the music, I scanned the crowds to see where Blaise had gone. I wanted to take another shot with him, that is, if he wasn't already vomiting his stomach out.
My heart skipped a beat when I saw a flicker of bleach blonde hair and silver eyes staring at me from afar. Malfoy was leaning against the wall to the far right side of the dance floor with Crabbe and Goyle to his left, and Pansy on his right. She seemed to be saying to him, but his eyes were locked in with mine.
I snapped back to reality when I felt Luna twirl me around. What I didn't know is that she intentionally twirled me into the arms of a sixth-year Ravenclaw boy, who now has his arm around my waist.
"Oh! Sorry about that," I exclaimed bashfully, though he didn't seem to think I had anything to be sorry for.
I felt Luna whisper in my ear as she nudged me towards him, "He's been looking at you all night. Dance with him!"
I looked back at Luna pleadingly, but I was already being pulled further into the crowd with him. I turned to look at his face. Easy on the eyes, I thought, Why not? I'm here to unwind, aren't I?
