Chapter 8

Justin

From the second I woke up on the beach, I can’t turn it off: this feeling like there’s more. Like there’s something else out there.

I see her face all day long. My brain settles on it when it’s not active, like a screensaver. Her small stubborn face has more written on it than other faces; it’s more honest.

At school, in town, I’d see Tara around. But now I look for her everywhere.

Rags II notices that this isn’t our usual route. He seems happy with the change in scenery. I slow down in front of Tara’s house. I find her window. The lights are on. The blinds are drawn, but I can almost make out a Tara-shaped shadow.

Rags II barks, looking up at me, asking me why we stopped. I pat his head, and pick up the pace again, not answering. I’m not sure what the answer is. It’s like an invisible force, strong and subterranean, pulling her to me.
