The snow beneath the wolf's paws sinks, leaving behind small prints as it trudges along, trailing throughout the dark, silent forest. All the loud animals have gone into hibernation many months ago to shield away from the harsh cold of the Winter.
However, wolves do not need to, especially this red wolf, running along side her black wolf brother, looking out for both of them. For the hunters were out during these cold times, knowing wolves come out particularly more at night. An owl hoots in the distance, signalling some sort of disturbance in the woods, most likely a small animal still searching for food.
There comes a clearing and the wolves pause for breath.
Small cabins are dotted throughout little clearings in this forest, providing shelter for the wolves and their families. A large hill in the distance overlooks the clearings; the largest cabin on the top. All of them; the chimneys puffing out light grey smoke.
They both turn to look up at the sky, the white contrasting with the darkness of the woods, despite the brightness of the snow on the ground.
Night was setting in quicker than they realised before. The sun casts shadows over the mountain tops, almost making the scenery threatening. It will only be light for a few hours a day from now, barely much time for pack runs or to hunt for food. Most of the animals have gone to the deeper parts of the forest, to find the warmer parts. And most importantly, to hide away from the wolf shifters on the outer parts of the woods, nearer to the villages and roads that lead to the main towns.
The wolf shifters having had to be forced to travel to the towns for jobs to provide money and food for the packs. Keeping hidden their shifter powers and who they truly are.
Blended into society perfectly and having even started their own small businesses.
Most of the wolf shifter packs have security businesses but work is slow anyways during the Winters: lots of people moving away from the harsh cold conditions.
Money can be hard to obtain, specially now but they'll do whatever they can to provide for their pack.
