REINA'S POV
"This is so romantic."
For context, it's Valentine's day. It's a holiday I never liked celebrating, even when I am in a relationship because it's a made-up holiday designed for the purpose of forcing couples to spend money to celebrate each other. Newsflash, you should be doing that every day you're together, not just one random day in February. I expressed those thoughts to Matthew, and even though he technically has no obligation to spend the holiday with me considering we aren't even together, he still insisted we spend the holiday together. He said it's because otherwise the two of us would just be lonely separately, so it's better off to just be lonely together.
Cheesy, I know.
But somehow, he still managed to convince me, which brings us to now. I have the day off of work so I dropped Liana off, and went about my morning as I usually would, which usually involved shopping for my own comfort. Then when the pink in every storefront began to deeply bother me, I picked Matthew up and reluctantly agreed to let him spend the rest of the day with me. How gracious of me.
Which leads us to now, where he's following me around in target like I told him he was going to. I send a glare at Matthew for his comment, and his grin doesn't falter in the slightest. "I told you I was shopping today," I reminded him, picking up a package of carrots. "I don't know what kinda date you expected."
I realized my mistake in word choice as soon as I finished the sentence, and the grimace quickly set in. "This is a date?" His voice goes a couple octaves up, and I know if I look at him again, he'd have that goofy smile on his face. "Wow, and you didn't even get me flowers? Worst date ever."
"Oh hush," I mutter, tossing the carrots in the cart. "You knew what I meant when I said that."
"I don't think I did." I continue walking, doing my best to angle my body away from Matthew's line of sight so he doesn't catch a glimpse of the red painting my cheeks. I try not to think about the teasing too much, because if I do, I know I'll admit something that I'm not quite ready to confront just yet. But Matthew doesn't make it any easier, his hand gripping my elbow before I could get too far ahead and pulling me back.
I stumble back into his side, then his arm drops over my shoulder. He doesn't say anything regarding his movement, just gently nudges my cheek with his nose before continuing down the path of produce I set us on. It was small, so fucking small, and yet it warmed my insides like some freshly made cocoa on a winter evening. I glance up at him, hoping I'd see a matching blush to my own on his cheeks, but instead, I'm greeted by his eyes already looking at me.
