6 | The Cold Hard Truth or Trust Is As Easily Broken As Glass, & It Seems the Symbolic Glass Is Affecting Your Intelligence

Carter Williams: (not edited)

The next morning, I pick Kaillie up, and hang around her a lot in the morning so Zach won't come up to her. Like I've said before, we don't particularly get along, especially after our last conversation.

But right now, it's lunch and he's approaching me. Kaillie's not here, I know this is a good time for a little chat. I'm just closing my locker when he reaches me and pushes me against the lockers, forcing me to drop my backpack on the ground.

"You told her!" he yells angrily. He keeps pushing me back into the lockers when I try to stand up straight. Ironically, it's not hurting, which is probably his intention.

"Actually I didn't," I say with a smirk. My facial expression just seems to make him angrier.

"Well who else would?" he says through clenched teeth.

"No one has to tell her if she saw it herself," I tell him as if he's dumb. Really, how dumb is this kid? I told him I wouldn't tell Kaillie-although I did lie-but still, I told her before I said that to him. Besides, it's not like I owe him any loyalty. Guess my reputation beat my words. I notice a small group of students has gathered around to watch our verbal brawl. Least if he snaps I have witnesses.

"You bastard!" he shouts in rage and tries to punch me, but I duck and he ends up hitting the lockers instead. "Shit!" he shouts with sudden pain from hitting steel instead of fresh and bones. While he's examining his fist, I find my way out from between the lockers and him so I can properly defend myself if he tries to punch me again. Which he probably will. I end up standing in the middle of the hallway with my arms crossed, smirking, waiting for him continue. Since this is probably gonna end in a suspension for someone, I'm gonna be smart and not provoke him and make that someone me. I may be the school's bad boy, but that doesn't mean I have to be stupid. "That's it!" He shouted as he swung at my face. I could feel his fist hitting my face, feeling like it left a mark. He recoiled, and I touched my skin, examining for blood. Pulling my hand back, I see that there's a little bit there, damn. I punched him back in the nose, but not quite hard enough to break up. I prefer to have these confrontations outside of school where I can't be suspended for my actions from one teacher walking by. "Damn it!" Zach shouts, leaning over and holding his nose. I didn't even punch as hard as I can. Weakling.

Taking a step toward him, I lowly tell him, "Stay away from Kaillie. Unless you want to be punched even harder than you just were." As I go to take a step back, he punches me swiftly in the stomach. I quickly step back, clutching it, even though I've had worse. Just as I go to punch him back, I hear quick footsteps and a familiar girl's voice yelling stop frantically. Kaillie. I stand up straighter as I see her step in front of me, and oddly enough, pushing me behind her by a couple steps. Zach's not gonna like what he hears. He's going to be verbally smacked, and maybe even actually slapped. I decide to just stand back and watch what happens.

"How dare you!" she shouts at him angrily. "You cheat on me for so long, thinking that's okay? Then you go up to Carter, who warned you of the consequences, and start punching him because you got caught?" she says harshly and to the point with narrowed eyes. Venom is seeping into her words, making Zach flinch and back up against the lockers when she steps towards him, putting more emphasis on her words. They say the scariest people are the ones who are usually calm and happy. "It's not his fault. He knew. You-"she said, pointing his chest"-should have known you'd be caught eventually. Secrets like that never stay hidden for long."
