"The surgery went pretty well." my mom said. I was awake for a little over an hour.
"The doctor said that your nose will be fully functional in about a month."A month?
"How long will it take for it to look normal, and not so purple like it did?" I asked, panicking.
My mom just calmly sat there.
"Just about a month, like I just said." My mom repeated in a stern tone. Then my dad and little sister came bombarding through the door. Casey was holding a new doll. Dad must have been dragged to the toy store after their orientation...
"Oh Harper!" My dad said. He strides over to me. "How are you!?" He pulled me in for a hug. I squeezed him back.
"I could be better." I replied.
He smiled and kissed my forehead. Then Casey came over to my side and she hugged my neck.
"Hi Harp." She said. I couldn't help but giggle a little.
"Hey kiddo." I responded with a grin.
"What's on your face?" She asked, touching a bandage in between my eyes.
"I got hurt."
"Oh. Ok."
Then Casey walked away to a chair by the door and she began to play with her doll."Anyways, how was the open house?" Mom asked dad.
"It was okay. Casey really likes the school." Dad said.
"That's good."
"Yeah, but the daycare teacher that, if we were to sign Casey up, seems a bit odd. She's really short...like Harper. And she looks underage." Dad continued.
"Whatever. I don't think that matters. Maybe she was an assistant or something. The school seems fine. I have a friend that works in that business!" Mom began. "If Casey likes it, then we should enroll her."
"But I am a concerned father who wants to know it's safe there!"
"Believe me, you are overreacting!" Mom argued. She always had to be right.
"Can we save this for later!? We are here to discuss Harper's injuries!" Dad exclaimed. But mom ignored him.
This argument they were having soon got really boring.
I tuned out.Then I noticed my sister.
She was now looking out of the doorway smiling at something. Then I looked out the window, which overlooked the streets below. It was raining. And the sky was slate gray. I hated this kind of weather. It made my head hurt and I was always in a horrible mood on rainy days. A few cars rolled by. I tried to make out which brand they were. It was a game that dad and I played whenever we were bored.
The first 5 cars were black Fords. Then I saw a golden Chrysler. And a silver Acura. And then a huge white truck with a Kit Kat ad on the side passed by quickly. I loved Kit Kats. Then my daydreams were interrupted by my mom."WHERE'S CASEY!?" She asked with a lot of panic. Then my dad ran out of the room.
