Chapter Vl
🌺My day went pretty quick after that. Gym Class was fine because we didn't have to get changed yet, but I'm pretty sure I won't see Duncan much in there at all during the first month or so of school. With his broken leg, he had to do some random assignment in the library instead. Next period was Spanish, followed by lunch, then Geometry, Study Hall, and lastly English.
When the final bell rang, I met Duncan at the main lobby. We decided to walk home together that day to talk about our first impression of high school.
I headed down the staircase, and I instantly spotted him. His shiny crutches reflected in the light, making him the biggest stand out in the large group of kids. "Hey,"
He smiled brightly, his cheeks rising up his face, "Hey."
"You sure you want to walk home with your crutches?" I asked, staring down at the metal poles underneath his armpits. "We still have time to catch our bus."
"Nah, I hate half the people on our bus anyway."
"Same to be honest," I laughed as I thought about all the annoying sixth graders who would ride in the afternoon and throw things back and forth across the seats.
I headed out the big main entrance, holding the the heavy door back for Duncan as he clopped pass me.
"Thanks."
"Sure,"
We rounded the tall and shiny flagpole and began to follow the cement sidewalk around the front of the building. I always took it for granted how close we lived to the school. It was really convenient, and I know my high school experience would have been 100x more stressful if I lived twenty minutes away like Lucile did.
As I had said, it was a hot day. The bright Florida sun beat down. Within minutes, I was already dripping with sweat, but I was pretty much used to it by now.
"So how was your first day?" Duncan asked.
It felt great for it just to be Duncan and I again. Being clogged up in that school with over a thousand other kids instead of two outside on a summer day was going to get some getting used to.
"Pretty good." If I thought long enough about it, High School really wasn't all that different, just bigger in every aspect, the building, the people, and expectations.
"Of course it was good if you had Biology with Sanders," He smirked and threw his head back with laughter.
My heart suddenly skipped a beat, and I felt a nauseating tickle in my stomach, "How did you know I have biology with him?!"
"I asked him, duh." Duncan said causally.
"What?! You asked him if he had biology with me?! What if---," I felt almost betrayed, the last thing I wanted was Duncan's giving hints to Sanders that I liked him.
"Dude, chill. I just asked if he had any classes with you." He chuckled, and my face was heating up with embarrassment. Why did he have to ask him that? Why? "Seriously Randy, he's not gonna think anything of it."
"How do you know that?" I huffed, glancing down at my flip-flop covered feet, trying to make my steps into a rhythm.
"Cause he's my friend, and I know him pretty well. He doesn't think little things over like that." Duncan sighed that 'Oh my god, you are absolutely ridiculous' type sigh and then added, "Just chill."
