Act 1. Chapter 5: The Mystery of the Bear Attack
The officers looked at each other before entering the Bear House. All of them are first timers on entering the house, because the last time it was thoroughly scoured by police officers looking for missing children was that time in 1950s when none of them came back alive. Since then, nobody has dared to enter the house, and the old and battered police crossing tapes all over helped elevate the townsfolks' fears.
"Are you sure he's here kid? Have you seen him come in here?"
Jacques shook his head. "No. We just parted ways on the intersection and I know he went this way."
"Well, that is quite vague innit?" said the rookie police officer.
"Scared?" challenged Jacques.
"No! They are!" The rookie, with a nametag of Powley, pointed at his seniors.
"Oi, you two children, since you are brave, why not enter on your own?" One senior said.
Jacques was bewildered. All of these adults are afraid to enter. However, one mystery haunts him, if these people consider this their first time entering, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY no less, then how about the other cases there has been missing children?
"How about...?"
Before Jacques could even finish his question, one officer cut in. "If you're asking how we solved the other cases, we did not. Those bodies were just lying on the ground when we get here."
Officer Powley scowled. "No, by lord, you find them after weeks of missing reports. You know they're inside, you're just waiting for them to come out dead, is that it?"
"Oi kid, you better watch what you say."
"I'm not a kid! I'm an officer. An officer with far more professional ball sacks than you, losers!"
Officer Powley marched inside the pristine and well-kept house. For a century old manor without habitants, it really is a wonder how it remained dustless and reserved. He searched inside the house, and when the first floor is cleared, he went upstairs.
Jacques cannot remain together with these officers. He knows the police can be crazy. If Officer Powley would really turn out dead, they might kill him, too, after that revelation he just heard. He ran inside the house to follow Powley, crazy-spirit butler be damned.
"Officer Powley! Hey." He whispered-yelled.
"Kid, why did you follow?"
"To commit suicide, ye dip." Jacques said sarcastically. "By the way, are you crazy? Are you not afraid of your seniors?"
"You're asking me if I'm afraid of my Seniors, not of the fact that this house is cursed?"
"Well, the living is scarier than the dead. Besides, I'm pretty sure those legends are untrue. It could be just bears living inside."
"That is true, and I considered that. This place is just superstitious."
Jacques chuckled. "So you really are a city boy. I bet people are smarter there in London?"
"Not a chance." Powley shrugged and smiled at Jacques. "We still believe in fairies. And so should you, little one."
After clearing the first three rooms, they went inside the last room only to find the peaceful face of Colin Meyers sleeping in a well-tucked king sized bed. He's wearing pajamas in pastel colours and his black curly hair are neatly combed at the side of his face. Jacques rushed to his side and tried to wake him, but he only received a little stir. My, the boy is blue and dying, and so Powley called an ambulance without the Seniors' notice – it encompasses Jacques irrational fear of being killed by police officers in the middle of the forest.
The news immediately reached East and West of Sussex.
For the first time since the Bear Attack, someone has been found alive in the Bear House.
