You often found yourself hiding amongst the masks you had created for yourself. It was defence. If people knew who you were then, well who knew what outrage awaited?
There were maybe two people in the world who knew you, and one of them was dead.
You make it back to the cabin before your activities, a black envelope sits on Wednesday's bed. You look at it curiously before Wednesday snatches it up tearing it open to what you would assume is excitement. "It's my family," she says out loud before reading the letter over. You see her eyes dart over the page, you can't help but be curious, never once over seven years had you got a letter, not that you'd expected one. She looks displeased, and now you are even more curious. "What's up?" You ask hoping it's not bad news.
"Bad news," Fuck.
"Why what's wrong?"
"There's a marriage,"
"Oh shit," You say. Weddings weren't inherently a bad thing but there's a reason you're not invited to them. "Who?" You ask.
"My uncle...again," She says tossing the letter aside.
"Again? What happened last time?" you ask not knowing what to expect. She looks up at you, something in her eyes contradicting her next sentence. "Freak accident... My younger brother Pubert was... playing with some wires... she flicked the wrong switch," she says a smirk pressed to her face. You smile back, "Tragic," you say finding yourself falling madly in love with her. "She was an extortionist," She said, her look cruel but pleased.
"So, this man is marrying again?" You ask, she giggles.
"For the right reasons this time, I know that for a fact,"
"Tragic," You tease, she scoffs playfully. You smile at her, finding your eyes gazing at her every feature, admiring her. "Stop staring at me like that," she says bashfully and you find yourself gravitating toward her. "I can't help it..." You say unable to take your eyes off her. You find her hand in yours squeezing it softly, "Come with me?" She says, looking at you like you're the stars in the sky. "What?" you ask, shocked for the most part.
"Come with me," she repeats, you pause for a moment processing what she asked you, her expression falls as you hesitate. You blink, "I would love to," You sputter. Her face lights up, "Really?" she asks again with relief. You wrap your arms around her, sweeping her up in a twirl as Wednesday giggles into the crook of your neck, before gently putting her back down, "Yes," you say excitedly. "You just hesitated," she says, happily, without a doubt.
"Just surprised mon Coeur," You say grinning. "I'm not exactly welcome at weddings..." You continue. "Neither is my family," she purrs and you grin, her body softly resting in your arms softly.
Eventually, you have to leave for your daily activities, all be it unwillingly. "Beverly has been awfully quiet, why do you think that is?" Wednesday asks as you both make your way to another pointless activity. "Who knows, maybe when I screamed at her in front of everyone I was a bit harsh..." You wandered out loud.
"I set her on fire my dear," She said, quickly realising her mistake of the words. Your eyes dart around your peers, hoping, No, praying nobody noticed. "You're right, she deserved what she got," you say remembering all the cruel things she had said and done, not to just you. You also found yourself imagining what she would do if she knew a damn thing about you.
"All right campers, Today we are going on an adventure!" Says a camp counsellor, with a fake enthusiasm that you often find in customer service works. "We are going to do a scavenger hunt! now what you want to do is get into groups of six, and each takes a scavenger pack from the 'box over there and then we'll run you through the rules!" By the time the counsellor finished, the other campers had already formed into somewhat cliché groups of campers. You and Wednesday found yourself in the somewhat problematic campers. "Alright then, Now you've all got into your groups-"
"Wait! We only have five people," said no other than Beverly and her gang of pretentious cult-like friends. You look around you, she was right she only had five. Just your luck your group had seven. "Seem's your right, ok then someone from this group needs to join them," Orders the counsellor. You all look at each other, none of you wanting to sacrifice yourself or each other. "We want Y/N," says Beverly with a smirk.
"You've got to be fucking kidding me," You mutter, you look around at your friends, they all have the same look a somewhat sorry one, "What? No way!" Wednesday says, which is quickly backed by Titus. "Well unless you chose someone else," Beverly calls back. You know she's planning something, revenge or something more? "Unless anyone else volunteers?" Says the consoler. "I'll-" begins Wednesday.
"Fine!" You say louder, you would play her game for now. Wednesday looks at you with a lot of questions in her eyes, She's up to something. You roll her eyes a little, Obviously, why not play her little game? Wednesday furrows her eyebrows Because we're fucking gay and I doubt she likes you because of your company. You look out her and blink, Ouch. Don't worry, I'll be fine.
"Famous last words," she mutters, only you heard. You chuckle.
You make your way to Beverly's group, which to your surprise contained Chase, you gave him a look. Now you have more questions. "Right, now that that's sorted, distribute the equipment among your group..."
This was a typical scavenger hunt, whoever won got to pick the week's movie for movie night. The rules were simple enough, you had to stay on track, and you could only use the radio if you were lost or needed a clue. You were given a map, a compass, a key and a list of clues. Whoever made if back with all the answers to the riddles won. Part of you wanted to win, the other wanted to lose, partly to kick Beverly's ego, and so you didn't have to watch some mainstream movie that had characters that were somehow more shallow than Beverly. "You promise to help us win Y/N?" said a pretty blond girl, on the lower end of Beverly's friend group, she sounded so hopeful. "I would rather gouge my eyes out," You say truthfully, she looked familiar but you couldn't place her. "You better help us, nerd!" Said Chase smiling at you.
"I've suddenly changed my mind," You say half teasing. "I take it my being here is your doing?" You ask he shakes his head. "No actually, it was my idea. I understand that you have experience with this kind of thing," She says somewhat civilly as if she's trying not to be mean, Why is she trying to be nice? You squint at her. "Chase doesn't shut up about you..." She says folding her arms, a defence. You look at Chase and then back to Beverly, and can't help but smirk, "Getting familiar are we?" You say hiding your outright disgust. Chase was no catch but even he could do better.
"Alrighty Campers, Ready?" Silence fell amongst the groups. You make eye contact with Wednesday, Good luck Her face reads in a condescending manner. Oh, haha You say back your will to live; leaving just as Wednesday was. "Ok! Get ready...Go!" Says the camper, everyone and their selected groups scattering, going in different directions. You fall to the back of your group, not really participating in your group activity.
"Come on Y/N, hurry up. We need you on the compass!" Says Beverly in her normal bratty voice. You look at her deadpan, begrudgingly taking the compass from her outstretched hand. "This way!" You say leading the way after having already read the clue, pushing past the group. "Wanker," You mutter to a very smug Beverly.
The group falls into small conversations, sticking together but not as a whole. You find yourself at the front of the group alone, having questions about why you were chosen out of everyone. The most disturbing thing you found was not the endless conversations of 'girl talk' or belittling of people they don't even know. It was how comfortable Chase was in this situation, your rival, the person you cannot stand the most, and he is totally ok with her. Even to your utmost displeasure Flirting... What the fuck. It wasn't jealousy, or territorial. No, it was chilling, repulsive in a way, your enemy and your friend.
You arrive at the first stop, the second clue, having not listened to any of the conversations that had happened around you. "Welcome to your first stop campers!"
You feel your body fill with dread.
