After a long drive in silence, we arrive. Suddenly I feel calm. I knw what I'm doing. Charlie noticed the sudden change, and he asks me what to do now. I pause before i tell him, making sure I can make it clear enough so that he will understand that if we get into a situation and I am in danger, he must create the distraction. It has been this way since me and Joleen.
"Here's the plan," I whisper. I know it isn't likely that anyone else but Charlie canhear me, but I want to make sure. You can never be to precocious in these situations, and i had learned that the hard way. "We go in round the back through a whole in the bricks, quietly, sticking to the shadows, and try to get the money that way. It usually works, and if we are careful we shouldn't get caught"
He nods his head at me in understanding. He trust me, which I guess in this situation is a good thing.
"Have you been here before?" he enquires, and I nod. I had been here six times before, and I knew exactly how not to get caught, yet sometimes knowing that doesn't help.
"I have a back-up plan aswell, just incase things go wrong," I explain. He looks impressed. That is, until I say, "however, it involves you creating a distraction whilst I get away with the money, then come back to help get you away."
He looks momentarily shocked. I don't blame him. i would be too if I was in his situation.
"Great. Why me?" he asks me. He doesn't sound too happy about it, but there is a glint in his eye, which makes me think he is just pretending. I sigh as I explain.
"Because I'm small and fast and I can escape easily. It always has been that way, ever since me and Joleen," I reply. I begin to feel the thrill of excitment course through me, and I curse myself. This is dangerous, I think to myself, I cannot make myself think it's just a game. However, I am grateful that all my previous worries have vanished.
Charlie pauses and looks at me with admiration in his eyes, and I find it hard to breathe. We need to go before I get other ideas. His handsome face is a few inches away from mine, and I can't help but look at his full lips. It takes a great deal of will to stop myself from kissing them.
"Okay, lets go!" he says, breaking the tension, punctuating it by thrusting his fist in the air. I silently laugh before turning around and heading into the shadows. The shadows are my allies. I feel relaxed in them, and it helps to know that Charlie is behind me, copying my every move.
A grin creeps across my face just before we enter through a small hole in the bricks. It feels good to be doing this again, and for some reason having Charlie by my side made it all the more exciting. A part of me wants to prove to him how good I am at my job. I slip through the bricks silently and sleekly, and I turn to see Charlie do the same. He is good for a beginner. I turn back still grinning.
However, the grin quickly turns into a scowl as I come face first to a handgun. I recognise who it belongs to instantly as I have seen countless times before, in reality and in my nightmares. It belongs to the man who has me cowering every time I remember or dream about it. It belongs to the man who has had me throwing up because of all the bad things I have seen him do.
"Hello Emily. Good to see you again. And, oh look, you brought a new friend," mocks Eric Prior.
I close my eyes and expect him to pull the trigger, but of course, that doesn't happen.
