The Road of Discovery Chapter One: The Road to Hell

Alec Pov

"'Let's run away to the big city' you said. 'It will be fun,' you said." I grumbled, walking down a never-ending road, pulling my heavy suitcase behind me.

"It will be fun! Once we get there, everything will be great." My best friend, and current number one person on my shit list, Jace argued.

"You said that we would take a bus the entire way to the city!"

"How was I supposed to know that the bus doesn't go all the way to the city?"

I stopped walking and turned around glaring at him. "Did you even look at the bus route?"

"There was a bus route?!" He asked, a look of shock appearing on his face.

"I would chuck my suitcase at you if it wasn't so heavy," I grumbled before sighing and stopping. "Let's take a break."

We both laid our suitcases on their sides and sat down, sighing in relief. The scorching summer sun was beaming down on us, and the fact that I was wearing my favorite leather jacket didn't help things.

"Why is my suitcase so heavy," I wondered out loud, glancing over at Jace. His was about the same size as mine, but he didn't seem to be having trouble lugging it around like I was. "All I brought were a few pairs of jeans, a couple of sweaters, and some T-shirts."

Jace wiped the sweat off his brow, leaning back. "It's heavy because I shoved some of my stuff into it."

"What do you mean?!"

He shrugged. "I needed to fit my keyboard in my suitcase. You had plenty of room in yours so I figured you wouldn't mind."

"I do mind! Very much in fact! Do you even know how heavy your crap is?!"

"You're doing an amazing job carrying everything. I envy your strength."

I shook my head before running my hands over my face. "Why didn't you just use your keyboard case and carry it on your back?"

"I, unfortunately, lost it about a week ago. I was performing at the park and a family of ducks decided to make it their new home. I wasn't going to risk my life to kick them out, so I humbly gave it to them."

"I have half the mind to make you carry my suitcase and yours." Shaking my head, I stood up again and set the suitcase upright. "How much further are we?"

Jace pulled his phone out and frowned at the screen. "My battery is going to die soon."

"You didn't think to charge your phone before leaving the house?!"

"You know, I can sense a lot of judgment coming from you right now. How about you keep it in your pocket?"

"I should have known better than to think you could be helpful," I grumbled before pulling my own phone out to open the GPS. The moment I clicked the screen on, a big red bar appeared, showing that my phone was also close to death.

Jace looked at it over my shoulder before smirking at me. "Why wouldn't you charge your phone before leaving, Alec? How irresponsible of you."

"Guess we keep walking and see where we end up," I sighed, putting my phone away and readjusting the guitar case sitting on my back. Unlike my suitcase, my guitar weighed barely anything as I started moving again.

"Let's talk about our plan for when we get to the city," Jace changed the subject. "The first thing we will need to do is find a place to live. Do we have enough money for a down payment on a place?"
