Road to Discovery Chapter Six: I Adore you, I adore you, I do.

Jace Pov - Age ten

"Why must we go to church every weekend? I hate wearing these uncomfortable clothes," I whined, pulling on the collar of my button up dress shirt. Mom has said buttons done all the way to the base of my throat, making me feel like I was choking.

"Oh hush," she scolded me, getting to my level to help me adjust the collar. "We go to church because that's the Christian thing to do. That and it supports the Lightwoods. Don't you want to see Isabelle and Alec?"

I nodded, pulling away from her constant tugging of my shirt. "Yeah, but it would be more fun to see then at the park or something. Robert doesn't let us play at church. It's so boring."

"You're not supposed to be playing in the middle of church anyway," my father chimed in when he walked into the room. He was fixing a blue tie around his neck, making sure to look nice and professional for work.

Robert Lightwood is the pastor of a small church in our even smaller town. My father worked in the building alongside him, greeting people and helping collect donations. Sounds like a boring job if you ask me, but he is there more than he's here with us.

What work does a church even have to make you have to spend most of your time away from your family?

"Isabelle is joining the choir this weekend. You should do everything you can to support her," mom instructed, getting back up on her feet.

I crossed my arms at that. "You said the same thing last weekend, only with Alec. We all saw how that went."

Robert likes his children being involved with the church and thought putting his kids in the choir would be the best bet. He meant well, I'm sure, but the moment Alec looked at all the people sitting in the stands, his eyes rolled to the back of his head and he was on the ground.

Was probably for the best. I highly doubt Alec can sing anyway.

"Just be nice and support your friends. They do the same for you during your piano recitals."

"You two should get going. I'm running a little behind so I'll meet you both there," dad ordered, grabbing his phone before going back upstairs. I watched him before looking back at my mom.

"Do we really have to go?"

She smiled sympathetically and cupped my face in her hands. "Do it for me. Pretty please?"

"...Fine," I mumbled, pouting.

She chuckled and leaned forward, rubbing her nose against mine and saying the same thing she always did before leaving a room.

"I adore you, I adore you, I do."

"Why do you always say that?"

"Because I mean it. There is no one in the world I adore more than you, Jonathan."

"I love you too mom," I assured her, making her smile even brighter.

"Let's get going," she said, grabbing my hand and leading me out to the car.

"This gown is so itchy," Isabelle complained, scratching at her arms. I couldn't help but laugh at her discomfort. She was wearing one of those huge choir robes and this one was way too big for her. It swallowed up her arms so much, you couldn't even see her hands.

"It's a little big on you. Did they not have a size smaller?"

She shook her head no pouting. "Daddy gave me Alec's robe. He didn't see the point in buying a different one."
