➰Chapter XXXVIII➰
"Well, I'm glad it all turned out well. I'm just submitting a few more reports about what happened in the Towers and I'll be off to Idris to meet with the Consul," Lydia said with a grin.
Isabelle nodded. "This could have turned out far worse. I'm just glad there weren't many casualties."
"Well, most casualties were actually Seelies. The Queen used her troops carelessly, which makes sense because she didn't really care about what happened to them," Lydia said with a sigh. "They were all just pawns in her wicked game."
"I'm glad she won't be able to hurt anybody else, ever again. Have you heard what the Seelie Court will do?"
"I heard some rumors that they would elect a representative for now, before sorting out what they will do with the Queen's title. Seelies are very traditional creatures."
"I just hope they've learned their lesson."
"HEY, YOU! WHAT DO YOU THINK--"
The commotion coming from the Institute's main entrance was enough to make both women turn their attention to the doors. There, a couple of guards were struggling to keep a brunette boy with geeky glasses and a desperate sound in his voice from getting into the Institute.
"I need to speak to the Head of the Institute!"
"No Mundanes are allowed in!"
"Hey, Feathershade," Isabellee called to one of them. "It's alright, let him in."
Feathershade gave Isabelle a wary look, but he reluctantly stepped aside and allowed the Mundane into the Institute. Isabelle was glad to see Simon again, she always was. But what she couldn't really understand was what he was doing here. Last time, they'd both agreed to go their separate ways. It was a bit easier to convince Simon, because he didn't have the five years worth of memories like Isabelle did. But now here he was, and if Isabelle didn't know any better, there was something in the way he was looking at her that felt as if he knew her better than the last time they saw each other.
"Is... Isabelle," Simon began, smiling broadly.
"Simon. I... I didn't expect to see you here."
"I needed to see you," Simon simply replied. "By the Angel. You are so beautiful."
Isabelle felt her cheek burn, but she cleared her throat. "Listen, you can't come here. It's not a safe place for Mundanes. You have your whole life out there, Si. Go and enjoy it."
"Yeah... That's not going to work out. Don't get me wrong, the band is doing great but..."
"But? Oh, no, please don't tell me you're in trouble."
"I'm... Not in trouble. But if I were, I'd just call you up," Simon said, as he reached for her hands and grabbed them gently. Isabelle's eyes widened, unsure of what to make of it all. "After all, that's one of the perks of being engaged to the Head of the Institute, right?"
"Wait. How do you..."
"I remember," Simon said, as he cupped her face gently with his hand. "I... I can't explain how, but I remember. I remember everything. And God, how I missed you."
"This... This can't be happening," Isabelle said, blinking her tears away as fast as she could. "You remember me?"
"How could I not?" Simon said, as he kissed her.
By the Angel, how she had been longing for that kiss. For what felt like forever, Isabelle had been dreaming about this moment. The moment the love of her life came back to her. The moment she could start feeling like she was whole again.
