Mathias' POV
The acting prefects were being called on stage at the assembly, 'cause the session was coming to an end and the school needed replacements to start a new era.
"Maintenance prefect, boy." Sister Magdalene read out from the paper in her hand. "Elisha Thompson." The science students made the most noise, jamming their hands and screaming.
"This thing is rigged, they always favor them," Andrew said.
"I doubt it. Science has three classes, art has two, and commercial has one. I think that's how the prefectship is being represented, and so far it's fair." Agnes argued.
"And we have four art students up there." Maria buttressed Agnes' point.
"And no commercial student so far," I chimed in, thinking how unfair it was that they were always excluded.
"Exactly," Andrew said, "so back to my point, they always favor science students."
"Well," Agnes was starting to reason with him, "maybe you're right."
"It could also be based on performance, behavior, and how social one is." Maria argued further with a shrug.
"Commercial students aren't social?" I asked her. We were side analysts to an ongoing election.
"Maintenance prefect, girl," Sister Magdalene called out.
"Science students are basically all over the place," Maria replied.
"Maria Benedict."
Art students gave the loudest cheer. Agnes jumped on Maria who stood like an iced fish. Our excitement was over the top because we weren't expecting it.
"Is Maria not on the assembly ground?" Sister Magdalene searched the crowd of cheering students with her eyes and Agnes pulled away immediately.
"Hurry up," Andrew said with a chuckle.
She made her way through the crowd, jogging up the stairs to the stage, and then she shook hands with Sister Magdalene. A teacher passed the blue beret to another teacher who wore it on her head. She had the same expression on her face like Alice in wonderland.
"And our final category, the head girl," Sister Magdalene said.
"Another science student." Andrew predicted, rolling his eyes.
"Anita Anthony."
Our jaws dropped, and the sounding jubilee was a combination of art and commercial students.
"She just broke a record!" Agnes squealed. Anita was the first commercial student to take the head girl title if I'm not mistaken. She worked hard for it, so it was well deserved.
"The show just started," Andrew said proudly.
The white beret sat on her head like royalty. I blew a whistle using my fingers and she noticed me in the crowd. I did a heart sign in the air and her smile got bigger.
"And our last but not the least prefect, the head boy. Reuben Adam." Sister Magdalene announced and the science students went wild.
"Good for him," Andrew said. Agnes and I applauded, and Maria couldn't hide her blushed face. They'd fall into each other's arms if they didn't have to compose themselves on stage. I guess they'll have to save that for later.
Anita and Reuben being counterparts was weird, but Anita loves me, and Ruben loves Maria, so I think we're all good.
"As you all know, you people are only acting prefects, so you won't be getting your name tags yet. Should there be any misconduct from any one of you, that person will be dropped," Sister Magdalene addressed them, "but we don't pray for that," she added.
