The next day Madison was awakened by the loud telephone. She groaned but then reached for it. "Hello," she croaked.
"Hey what are you still doing in bed it's noon," came Frank's annoyingly chipper voice over the line.
Maddy hadn't gotten home until 7 that morning and all she wants to do was sleep. "Uh, I uh got in late last night."
"Why you weren't out with Gerard again were you," Frank asked instinctively panicking. He quickly realized what he was doing and retracted what he said. "I mean it would be fine if you were I was just..."
Maddy laughed raspily. "It's ok Frank, no I was not with Gerard, I started a job last night."
"What you got a job?! Maddy that's great!"
"Yeah I'm a phone operator at a call center and I'm going to be working nights. It's not much but I have to start somewhere." She told him the lie she had carefully thought out. It explained her new nocturnal lifestyle and there was really no way he could find out that she wasn't working for a call center. It wasn't like he could show up or ask to speak to her specifically. She felt bad lying but the thought of disappointing him was even more unbearable.
"No that's a great start, I'm sure you'll move on to something even better in no time. Well I'll let you get back to sleep I just haven't heard from you in a few days, I was worried."
"I know we'd just been spending so much time together I just didn't want to overstay my welcome. You have a life and way more important things to do than be hanging out with me all the time. I didn't want you to get sick of me."
"Maddy I haven't seen you in 8 years. There's no way I'll be sick of you anytime soon." Even though he couldn't see her Maddy was smiling widely over the phone. "Listen I hope you don't mind but I set up an appointment with the doctor. It's for tomorrow at 4 can you make it?"
"Yeah that should be fine. I should able to pay for it too since I got my job..."
"Maddy really it isn't a problem you don't have to..."
"No I want to."
Frank sighed. "Fine as long as you promise that if it gets to me too much you'll tell me and I can take over."
"I promise," she said sweetly.
"Alright, well get some rest."
"I will thanks Frank."
Maddy tried to go back to sleep but she couldn't. Instead she got up and made herself a bowl of cereal. She stood in the middle of her living room floor trying to remember some of the moves Shari had taught them the night before but she only ended up falling flat on her butt. It didn't matter though they would have a more formal dance class before the club opened tonight. Shari had assured everyone that it would not be difficult. She was actually looking forward to it. She had watched the other girls dance up on stage. While the thought of taking her clothes off definitely unnerved her, it also interested her. It amazed her that every man in the room couldn't take his eyes off of the girl dancing. Maddy couldn't help but wonder what it must be like to have that kind of power.
