"She's awake! She's awake!"

The girl opens her eyes slowly but quickly shut them back tight to block out the harsh light.

"Turn off the light it's too bright for her eyes," she hears, "Just leave on the one beside the bed."

She cann feel the lights go dark so she tries once again to peek. This time it doesn't hurt as much, or at least her eyes don't hurt as much. Her head is pounding. She tries to touch it but finds that her arm is bound tightly with cloth and that she can't move it. Up until now she has only heard voices but the persons to whom those voices belonged now come into vision.

They speak to her but she cann't understand them. They twittered amongst themselves before addressing her again.

"You speak English," asks one. She is darker than the girl and she has eyes so dark they look almost black.

The girl nods.

"Wonderful! We will go and get doctor and tell him you awake okay?"

The girl lies in confusion waiting for whatever will happen next. She hears footsteps and suddenly a handsome young man appears at her side. He is also tan like the women that just left but he has honey brown eyes and shiny black hair.

"Hello, I am Dr. Kassis. I'm very glad to see you are awake. I'm just going to check you out to see if you are okay." He begins looking into her eyes with a bright light that hurts and listening to her heart among other things. "You seem to be doing well. Except for your already existing injuries which also seem to be healing nicely. Are you in any pain?"

She nods feebly.

"Where?"

She points to her head with the arm that isn't bandaged.

"Your head? Okay, we'll get you something for the pain right away." Then he sits down gently on the edge of her bed. "Can you speak Miss?"

She opens her mouth but no sounds come out.

"It's okay," he puts a hand comfortingly on her healthy shoulder, "You probably just need some more rest you've been through a lot. I'll get someone to bring you some pain medication and then I'll come check on you later."

He smiles warmly at her and then leaves.

"That's all I remember," Madison said finally.

Dr. Berman moved to open the curtains and light instantly flooded the room. It took some time for Maddy's eyes to adjust to the light.

"That was excellent Ms. Phillips. It's important for me to know what we're starting with so that I can help you get to where you need to be. So if that's your first memory that's our starting point. What I want you to do is each night when you lay down to go to sleep, I want to turn off the lights and breathe deeply just like you did here today. Think about that first memory of waking up in the hospital and then concentrate on what happened just before then. It will be very difficult and you may not be successful at first but it's important to do it every night. I want you to reach for that next memory sometimes even actually visualizing yourself reaching for that next memory in your head can help bring it to the fore okay? That's it for today, you can go out and make an appointment with Tanya to come back next week."

"Thank you so much doctor," said Frank earnestly, shaking his hand.

They went out to the waiting room once again. This time Tanya was not on the phone and was able to help them quickly.

"Your bill will come to $478. And how are you going to pay for that?"

"Cash," Madison said immediately.

Frank gaped as she pulled wads of cash from her purse and began counting them out. Even Tanya looked a little dazed but neither of them said anything while Maddy counted out her four hundred and seventy-eight dollars.
