August 2020

Time had passed and today I was receiving my bachelor's degree in film & tv. I was also receiving my diploma in sound and lighting. I did those extra courses on the side because the film industry is a hard place to get into.

My parents were currently driving me to the awards ceremony and saying how they remember my first awards ceremony when I was little. Typical parents, always embarrassing their children. I just smiled and went along with it.

I hadn't really thought about Daniel in the past couple of months, I guess that's because Why Don't We went on a break and I was focusing on my studies. As we were also in the year 2020, some of the craziest things went down. My classes went online for a while so I was pretty lucky to get an in-person awards ceremony in these times.

Christina and I had been texting non-stop and she told me that's Gabbie, Jack's now ex-girlfriend, had a baby last year. I was so thrilled for Jack and Gabbie, they're definitely the best parents Lavender could ask for.

"Samantha Redfield is receiving her bachelor's degree in film & tv and her diploma in sound & lighting." The secretary of the university announced as I walked along the stage to receive my bachelor and diploma from the head of film & tv.

"Congratulations, Samantha." He shook my hand, handed me my certificates, we took a picture together and then I walked off stage.

Once the ceremony had finished, I looked around for my parents and found them talking to someone unfamiliar. I couldn't see their face but when I approached my parents and saw the person, the biggest smile grew on my face.

"Christina!!!" I squealed and hugged my best friend.

"Oh my gosh! Congrats chickee! I'm so excited for you! Bachelor and diploma. She's smart!" Christina said to me.

"Yes she is" I laughed as we spoke about myself in second person. "Wait, how did you even get here?" I asked her.

"By plane. Duh." She answered. "Your parents set it all up. They flew me out here and I quarantined for 2 weeks in a nice hotel. So don't worry, I don't have COVID." Christina explained.

"That's great!" We chatted for what felt like hours but was only minutes.

"Sam, hun. This man would like to speak with you." My mother had caught my attention.

A tall man, probably in about his later 20's, wearing a suit and several lanyards approached me.

"Samantha, my name is Tim Andrews and I'm a representative from boyband, Why Don't We. We would like you to be apart of our team and help out along side of Evan Hara and Zack Caspary. We've seen your work and we want you to come work on the latest project for the band. Your flight would leave tomorrow. What do you say?" He explained.

I stared at him, gobsmacked. Christina pulled me to the side and excused us while we chatted.

"I know what you're about to say. 'But Daniel!' Come on, Sam. Let it go because this is huge opportunity. You'd be working for them and this is like your dream job. You cannot pass up this." She said and even got a spot on impression of me.

I just rolled my eyes. "Fine."

We turned back to Tim and I accepted. My parents cheered when I told them what happened and we all went out to celebrate.  On one hand, I was thankful for Christina but on the other, I wanted to die. I had to see Daniel again and that made me nervous. We hadn't interacted since we last left off and the only thing I had from him was his music.

Yes it was probably dumb for me to listen to his music when we weren't together but you had to admit, Why Don't We are extremely talented and their music rocked.

"To Sam!" Christina held up her drink and we all cheered.

Right now I was happy. I was with my parents and my best friend. I had gotten my dream job, my bachelors degree and diploma. Life was pretty good except for that one part where I had to work for my ex-boyfriend. But I wasn't going to let that get in the way of my dreams. It never stopped me the first time so why now.

"We love you, Sammy!" My dad said and ruffled my hair.

I smiled in annoyance and fixed my hair but I couldn't help think about when Daniel called me Sammy for the first time. Christina and I were hanging with Why Don't We and Daniel was giving me a massage but I didn't want him to stop. I smiled at the thought but also cried. I wiped a few tears away before anyone saw and went back to reality with my family.
