The Angel

"Why can I see you but others can't?" Elle asked as sand slipped through her fingers. It felt cold in her hands, so did the gentle breeze pushing her hair to the side. The air was picking up her scent, bringing it to him. It was sweet but light - lavender and vanilla. That mixed with the ocean air filled him, intoxicated him.

"Humans usually can't see us, but somehow you can. How long have you been having those dreams?"

"I've always had them, I guess. I remember having them as a kid, then again in high school for a while. They came back about a year ago but in the last couple months they've gotten so strong. Wait," She looked up at him, frowning. "Humans? Humans can't see you?"

"What do you see in your dreams? What happens?"

"Um," she shifted her mind to his question. "You and others are usually fighting big dark figures. Just like the one I saw yesterday chasing the little girl!" She realized, but her mind couldn't let go of one thing he'd said. "Humans?" He looked out to the ocean. She lifted herself up and started to pace. "Please, I feel like I've slowly been going crazy. They just keep coming back stronger and it all feels so real. Then yesterday happened and it's like when I saw that little girl running and what was after her I knew exactly what to do. And it all happened so fast. Then Mia came along and said she didn't see anything and I've just been feeling like I've gone completely insane but then you." She said turning towards him again. She dropped back down to her knees on the sand in front of him. "You were there yesterday and you're here now. So it has to be real. Unless I'm still going insane. Oh God, what if I'm going crazy and just having another really vivid dream." She pushed her stray hairs back and started to feel light headed again. She fell back into the sand and let her head fall into her hands.

"Why don't you slow down before you make yourself sick." He said with a humorous edge.

"Where are you from?" He cocked an eyebrow. "You have an accent."

"England."

"That he answers." She wrapped her arms around herself.

"It was an easy answer to give with very little consequence."

"Okay, see you say things but still nothing makes sense." She rubbed her hands over her arms feeling the chill of the night.

"The dark figure you saw was a demon." He said as he started to take his jacket off. "The demon was chasing the young girl. You saved her." He slid himself closer to her in the sand and wrapped his coat around her shoulders. "All the stories you've heard since you were a child are true. Demons, warlocks, werewolves, all true." He held on to the ends of the jacket, their faces close again. Her breathing became unsteady. She tried to understand, to believe the things he was telling her. She needed to know the answer to the question that haunted her most.

"Your mark," She let her fingertips touch it again, his skin warm, though this time nothing happened. "What is it?"

"It's the mark of the angel. An angel's wing and a sword of light." He said in a softer voice now. He could feel the light, soft touch of her fingertips against his skin. His heart began to beat faster, his skin humming. Elle let out a nervous laugh.

"And what does that mean?" She took both sides of the jacket from him and wrapped them closer. "Thank you." He rested his arms on his knees and looked into her eyes.

"It means that I am half human and half angel."

"What?"

"I'm part of a people that protects humans from demons. The dreams you've been having, if anything like the one I saw tonight, are of battles that have already happened." It all seemed so impossible as she thought of it, but her body, her heart, it all somehow made sense.

"But I'm human. How can I see you? Why am I having these dreams?"

"I'm not sure." He said honestly as he pushed away a strand of her hair. "But I intend on finding out." She looked into his eyes. She had no idea who he was, where he came from. He was so close to her, his light touches felt so warm and comfortable while leaving her skin tingling. She felt such a strong pull to him yet he was a total stranger. She knew nothing about him. She looked back out to the ocean and noticed the sky getting lighter.

"Oh my God, it's almost morning. Mia's going to freak out if I'm not back before she wakes up." She stood quickly and realized she had no way of getting back. "Hey, how did we get here?" He stood up next and only smirked. He walked in front of her and turned his back.

"Hop on." He said.

"I'm sorry, what?"

"You said you need to get home. Hop on."

"You want me to get on your back?" He sighed, exasperated. She put her hands up. "Okay, okay. Not like this would be the weirdest part of my night." She jumped onto his back, wrapping her arms around his neck, her legs around his waist. He placed his hands around her legs and turned his head back towards her, getting her scent again.

"Hold on." He said quietly before his grip tightened on her and the world became a blur again. Only seconds later she found herself at the end of her walkway, her breath catching up again. He loosened his grip on her and she slowly slid back down to the ground. He turned to face her as she slid his jacket from her arms. She handed it back to him and they stood there for barely a moment, just looking at each other.

"Thanks for the jacket." She finally said and walked up to the door. She turned before going in and saw him standing there, holding his jacket. Elle went back inside and when she looked out the window, saw that he was gone. She went to the couch and slid back under the blanket. She fell into a deep sleep and dreamt of this night, of him. He stayed near by, watching her dreams with her.
