Days had gone by without Elle running into Jay again. Yet she'd always felt he was near by. She lay once again on the beach, though this time she was alone, waiting for Mia to finish working her shift at the surf shop across the road. For the first time since their last encounter, Elle didn't feel him near. She loved feeling the heat of the sun on her skin. She felt happier than usual, healthier. Her days were relaxing and fun while her dreams at night stayed calm and fairytale like. Even now, she let herself slowly fall into a deep sleep.
She opened her eyes to find a dark pink sky and heard nothing but the waves lapping. Slowly, cautiously, she sat up on her towel and found the beach completely empty. She felt cold and found the sun was missing when she looked up to where she'd seen it last. She rubbed her arms as she pushed herself off the ground and was surprised again to see a floor length dress where her bathing suit had been.
It pooled at the ground in soft lavender and rose to a synched waist. Her neckline dove into a deep v-neck and sleeves covered her arms down to her hands. Her hair, soft with waves like the ocean. flowed over her shoulders down to her bottom. Suddenly she gasped at the burning sensation at the nape of her neck, just to the left. When she reached for it, Elle noticed the ocean.
Though she heard the sound of waves moving back and forth, the water stood completely still. It was black, and seemed so dark and heavy. Then she saw something, where the black ocean met with the dark pink, almost red, sky. Black shapes began to form in the distance and grew taller, bigger, multiplied as they approached. Fear struck Elle when she recognized the lanky shapes as the same as the one she'd seen destroyed by a truck on the road behind her, though she only found more sand that went as far as she could see when she turned to look now.
Elle tried to back away as the creatures approached but her dress seemed to have sunk into the sand. Though she tried to rip it away or remove the dress entirely, it stayed put. Panic grew as they got closer. She could see their dark beady eyes now. She searched from side to side along the beach to find help when all of a sudden she felt cold metal in her palm. Elle looked down to find a sword made of pale blue light in her hand glowing fiercely. A shriek shattered through the air and when she looked up and saw the creature ready to swing its sharp knife-like fingers at her. She let out a scream and shut her eyes. When she heard the creature scream back in pain she opened her eyes and found her sword plunged into the gut of the creature before it exploded to black dust.
Before she could react, barely think, she saw another black creature prepare to strike to her left. As she readied to defend herself again, a strong and quick figure, thought different than the shadows, jumped in front of her and stabbed the shadow and three more behind it.
"Are you alright?" Jay asked as he spun back towards her.
"What's going on? Where are we?" Elle said with a shaky voice then screamed when Jay lunged forward and sliced two more to dust.
"Use your sword!" Jay shouted.
"I can't move! Why can't I move?" A creature threw itself at her and she pushed her sword forward again. "I can't make it stop!" She shouted. She knew she was dreaming, but couldn't get out, couldn't wake up.
"Elle!" Jay yelled towards her. "Take the sword and make it stop!"
"I can't!"
"Do it, now!" He ordered. Elle held the sword up in front of her with both hands as the creatures continued to come.
"Go away!" She shouted but fell to her knees after being struck by a creature on her side. She heard Jay call her name from a distance. The wound bled under her ripped dress and stung more than any pain she had felt before combined. Jay threw himself in front of her, killing the creature that had cut her.
"Get up and stop it now!" Elle shakily, her breath so thick it barely made its way to her lungs, got up to her feet and held out the sword again. She held it tighter now, pushing through the pain, using it, and poured her entire body into it.
"By the power of the light above me, the air around me, and the sea before me," she shouted, her voice strong and steady, it echoed over the ocean. "I command you to return to the darkest depths where light, air, and water will never reach." And after her last words, Elle turned the sword and plunged it deep into the sand creating a wave of white light, disintegrating the creatures close to her and blinding those still coming from the black ocean forcing those left over to retreat. Jay covered his eyes from the brightest light he'd ever seen until it blew passed him and over the ocean. The light faded to nothing and the sword vanished from her hands.
"Well," Jay said, pushing his jaw-length hair back as he breathed a sigh of relief, which was cut short when Elle, pale as the white sand below her, fell to her knees, wide-eyed, trying to catch her breath. Jay ran back to her and dropped to his knees with both his hands on her shoulders to prevent her from continuing her fall.
"Take it slow. Deep breaths, try not to panic. All you have to do is breathe through it and wake up." Jay moved his hands up and down Elle's arms, relaxing her as she attempted to take in deep breaths. The surge of power that had burst through her, the sword, and into the air had shocked her system and completely taken her breath away. She'd felt as though she'd been drowning under the light and power that had come from her. The pain from the cut on her side dulled by the adrenaline.
So she took deep breaths, deeper, longer, till Jay slowly began to blur in front of her and she felt herself gently fall back with Jay's hands under her neck and back.
She gasped hard and sat straight up when she woke from her dream. She still felt the warmth of Jay's hands on her arms, so she reminded herself not to panic and to take slow breaths as she brought her hands up to her arms. Everything came back so quickly, the bright blue sky, the sun, the people around her shouting, laughing, throwing a football, the children splashing each other and running in and out of the water. She had to close her eyes to stop the dizziness.
"Elle?"
