death valley

i wanna drive at midnight
through death valley, no headlights.
just drive and stare
at all my wonders.
the stones move
so i sleep with one eye open.
the sky is a glitter spill of death
those lights are long gone.
in that void, iron clouds part
so the above can watch you,
you with your back turned
in your sanctuary of sleep.

i think you're really
really beautiful.
i kiss your bare shoulder.
sat to my right, your smile
reflected in the black.
wheels purr against
the gravel, i swerved.
there's no one else
on this road but us.

all we are, are desert things
will of the earth biting
down on us, yet we stand.
oh, we're in the states
and im the one dreaming
in the passenger seat.

we don't want to go home
we like only being able to see
two metres ahead of us.
