As terrifying as infiltrating the MistWing village was, Daybreak had to admit that it was a good distraction.
Right now, a distraction was exactly what she needed. The MistWings, WoodWings, and RainbowWings were in danger. Daybreak and Foliage were wandering off into the unknown. Daybreak had just discovered that she was a Dark...No. She was a RainbowWing and would always be a RainbowWing, regardless of the color of her scales.
Daybreak took a deep breath and tried to regain focus. She was here to find a MistWing willing to betray their tribe and risk their life for a chance to save the world. Had she met anyone in the village who seemed to be trustworthy? Well, there's Gale. And maybe Downpour. Gale was in Queen Monsoon's army, guarding the outskirts of the Storm Kingdom alongside Daybreak. Daybreak had heard her whisper a few times about her frustration with the way Queen Monsoon was ruling the kingdom, so she seemed like the kind of dragon Daybreak needed. Downpour, on the other talon, worked closely with the queen -- Daybreak assumed he was an advisor -- but, like Gale, he didn't seem to mind going behind Monsoon's back.
So I should ask them to go behind her back. The longer I wait, the more time the DarkWings have to achieve their goal.
"Gale," said Daybreak, "there's something I need to talk to you about. Gale attentively turned to Daybreak. Their counterpart, Nimbus, was off talking to another guard, so it was just the two of them. Their post was at a barren field, where the stony ground of the Storm Kingdom began to collide with the Great Grassland.
"Um," stammered Daybreak, struggling to decide what to say, "do you believe in the prophecy? I mean, do you think it's true?"
For a second, Gale's expression changed- confusion? suspicion?- before settling back to normal. "I'm not sure, Droplet," she replied. Droplet. Right. That's my MistWing name, thought Daybreak. I need to start remembering that.
"I mean," Gale continued, "all I really know about it is what other MistWings have told me.
"What would you say," said Daybreak, "if I told you that the prophecy was fake, but there is a way to stop the war, and you can help me with it?"
Gale's calm, cheery face turned as hard and serious as stone. "I'd say, 'Tell me what you need me to do.'"
