The Fallen Queen is set in the 1950s. I can't recall exactly where, as in country, (France I think?) but Marie and her family live in a house that's rumored "haunted".
Marie's has two siblings, her older brother Jeremy, who has autism, and her younger sister Audrey.
It's about Marie's abusive mother and how she and her siblings deal with her, and her imaginary friend, Ana.
This book is actually pretty scary. I don't know how to describe it, but the visuals and the concepts and the back stories are frightening.

I think most of what contributes to the horror is the main character's situation. For her there is nothing beyond her mom, the house, and Ana. Her whole life is just stay out of mom's way, talk to Ana, and that's what freaks me out; her not really being able to escape her situation, and her whole powerlessness about it all since she's just a kid, too.
