Five

Evie waited, they all turned around to inspect her. She had gathered up her curls in a knot at the back of her neck, single curls hung down caressing her throat and stretching to reach her breasts. Her eyes searched for Joseph and he held out his hand. Her fingers slipped into his and he gathered her into his arms.

“This is Evie, let’s introduce everyone.” He gestured to Samuel. “This is Samuel.”

Evie stared into his dark bottomless eyes and smiled. Samuel was barely conscious now, he had no interest in anything and they had been talking for what seemed an eternity, he wanted them gone. As the days passed the nothingness seemed to be engulfing him more and he came out of the darkness less each day.

The blackness pulsed as she stared into it, she was aware of the emptiness but it fascinated her. It seemed familiar and almost comforting. What lurked at the bottom of the darkness she wondered? Then she stuck out her tongue and laughed. Samuel blinked, something unusual had happened, he refocused on her.

“That’s better, I have you attention now, I’m sure you’ll be back to being bored when you get to know me.”

Silk slid through his fingers. He rubbed his fingers slowly staring at the empty space where her hand had been. This was not what he expected. She had his attention.

“This is Jessamy.”

“Hello Jess, did you choose this dress?”

Jess grinned back at her open smile and nodded.

“It’s awful,” Evie said giggling. “I mean if I was taller and had bigger breasts, but look at me, I look like a prostitute.”

Jess stared at the plunging neckline of the dress. “Oh, but there’s a lovely row of beads. Where are the beads Joe?”

He shrugged, disinterested and randomly hugged Evie, she stroked his arm and Jess felt her eyes fill with tears. Joseph was content; all his pain had gone as he held her in his arms.

Evie reached out and held her bicep gently, there was very little muscle, she seemed so weak and fragile. “Hey don’t be sad, it’s just a little joke, I’m a bit shy of meeting people so I tend towards humour, I didn’t mean any offence. I’ll find the beads, ok?”

Jess grinned and then suddenly hugged her; she had a friend, they could start a girls club now. Evie looked at Joseph as she returned the hug.

Lewis stepped forward his hand outstretched.

“I’m …”

”You’re Lewis. I have been warned about you.” Evie indicated with her right index finger onto the digits of her left hand. “You are mischievous and manipulative. You down play your intellect, oh, and you have eyes that, allegedly, hypnotise women.”

Joseph, Jess and Lewis started talking immediately. Their words rolled over each other. Evie grinned at the increase in noise.

“How do you put up with all this noise Samuel?” Evie turned to him deferentially and smiled. Samuel stared deep into the pools of boiling chocolate, deep, dark and addictive; she turned back to the argument. The curls pinned at her back of her head snaked across curling and wrapping themselves around each other. He would purchase a hair slide, something that would accentuate the colour of her hair.

Evie laughed at the three people arguing, she turned to Anthony and held out her hand.

“I’m Evie pleased to meet you…Anthony?” His hazel eyes were bright and slightly fearsome, it was a shame they were hidden in such a volume of flesh. “All families argue, it means there’s love there.” Evie whispered. Her arm slipped around his and she hugged it. “Why don’t you show me the house until they finish?”
