Six

Evie walked slowly down the corridor. She appreciated the warmth of the light that poured through the wall of glass that made up one side of the house. Its clarity made her feel slightly dizzy; maybe she would fall, she stepped back. Joseph had only been away, how long was it now? She glanced at her wrist, it was bare. Her head swam; how long had she been here? How long had he been gone? Samuel was angry with her, he had snapped at her questions, but she had so many.

Who was impartial enough to be honest? Lewis. He had no reason to be anything other than objective. She would go to seek help from him.

Evie knocked on the door and turned the handle, then stopped and ran her fingers along the metal bar. It was intricately engraved with a dragon. Her finger nail fitted perfectly in the markings on his back. She turned the handled and pushed as she smiled. Lewis was standing in the centre of his room, he was apparently fastening his shirt; his toned chest was highlighted by the open shirt which was aligned perfectly with each nipple. He raised his eyes knowing exactly how attractive he looked. Evie smiled, she liked his anarchic attitude, this was someone she could tease and not be worried about the consequences.

“Need some help?” She enquired, all her concerns melting away. Lewis raised his arms pushing his chest towards her, Evie wanted to snigger but refrained and started to button his shirt.  “I have a few questions, about things.”

“Ask me anything?”

She looked into his delicious blue eyes and laughed. “I can’t if you continue with the posing and the, is it supposed to be smouldering looks? I will spend all my time swooning or laughing.” Evie talked casually, teasing his demeanour.

Lewis watched her dainty hands slowly moving close to his flesh. He scanned the top of her hair and felt at peace. Her pulse was slow and calm; he wasn’t a threat, but that was good wasn’t it? In his heart it didn’t feel right that she was so comfortable with him, like an old pair of slippers.

His chest didn’t colour evenly, the red flush of embarrassment moved faster up the right than the left of his body. Why would that happen? A shoe fell onto the floor and she felt his body jump slightly. Jess opened the clothes closet smiling; she held her shoes in one hand and an item of lacy clothing in the other.

“Sorry, I just…” She smiled knowingly at Evie, her eyes flicking quickly to Lewis. Evie felt shocked, she didn’t understand why. The third button was stubborn, but she had slender fingers and strong perfectly shaped nails.

“There all done,” Evie said softly, “But next time you get the person who took it off to fasten it. I get all the hard work and no pleasure, and that’s not really my thing.”

The pink flush had reached his cheeks now and he opened his mouth to speak. Lewis felt sickened. This was so wrong, so very wrong. She was standing in his room, he could smell her, feel her blood flowing through her veins and she thought that he was with Jess. How had everything got so complicated, so quickly?

He had thought Joseph crazy, how could he know that his soul mate had been born. It was just a myth, there were millions of people in the world therefore there must be many compatible women. Finding any one of those women was difficult enough without reducing the number to just one; finding ‘the one’ would be nothing short of miraculous.

Joseph was handsome. Even by vampire standards; he was considered a good catch, shy, bookish, brooding, a definite leading man. The problem was that whole characterisation was wrong. Joseph was introverted, he preferred his own company to that of others not because he was shy but because he thought most people banal and irritating.
