Seven
Evie felt it burning inside her, the hunger. When Jess had called she had been aware of her own irrational behaviour, when Jess had agreed to get her some food she hadn’t refused. The surprise was how it arrived.
Evie looked into the garden; she heard the knock and turned to see a stranger. “Hello” she said with forced cheerfulness. Her body ached for food and Joseph, food and sex were now inextricably linked in her mind and she craved contact.
“You called for food.”
Evie smiled and nodded, they stared at each other. “Do you have the food?” Evie replied, she was finding it difficult to keep smiling, this was becoming irritating.
“I am the food.”
She blinked and then stepped forward. “You’re what?”
“I’m your food. Each vampire has a human allocated to them, some have two or more. I’ve been waiting for you to wake, I’m your food.”
Evie stepped back.
“I know we’re both new to this, but I had to be bitten to get through the screening so I do know what to expect.”
He hadn’t seen her in person before, she was gorgeous, her hair was so thick, it was gathered back but the crazy curls bounced all around her. The shirt she wore fitted perfectly; it focused the eye on her cleavage, which needed kissing. They all knew Joseph had left on business and that she may need more than just food, it was that possibility that had caused his erection to be primed most of the day. Blood and sex the perfect combination, he had heard the rumours and he wanted to experience it first-hand.
The anticipation of their first meeting made his stomach ache, what if she refused him? He liked this house and the people in it, he didn’t want to return to his damp ridden digs and his diet of eggs, his future was here and all he had to do was survive this first meeting.
Evie stepped back as he moved forward. He was just three or four inches taller, he was handsome, he kept himself in good shape and he seemed very enthusiastic. He reminded her of a Labrador puppy.
“What’s your name?”
He leaned forward whispering. “I’m not supposed to tell you,”
“Why?”
“This is a purely business arrangement, you can’t get involved with my life.”
Evie stared at his perfectly shaped ears as he glanced furtively towards the door. They pulled her towards him even closer.
“If you get attached to me then you may not feed on me.”
His words made her feel sullied and grubby, eating without emotion felt sordid. When she fed off Joseph it was of mutual benefit, this felt parasitic.
“I’ve changed my mind” she moved away from him.
The excited eyes changed to frightened so suddenly.
“No” he grabbed her hand and tried to pull her down to the bed. “Please, if you don’t feed on me I will be given to one of the others and their humans sometimes don’t last. They take too much, or they get over excited and their humans get damaged. You won’t take too much, and you’ll be careful, I know you will.”
Evie felt overwhelmed, her emotions were out of control, hunger was affecting her capacity to reason.
“I’m new to all this!” she gestured to the house. “What if I become like the others, if I take too much?”
He looked into her eyes and a smile gathered at the corners of his lips. “You wouldn’t do that. I know you won’t do anything to hurt me, I feel it.”
