Chapter Ten

Monday morning

I walked tenaciously to my locker with Adam right beside me. I felt like a whole new person. Stronger. Smarter. Better. Ready to take on anything or anyone that came my way. I was ready to fight and to win. I grabbed what I needed from my locker and then walked over to the tables where I knew Rachel and her friends waited for the bell for class to ring. I spotted her sitting at the center of attention captivating her audience with some story or other. Not caring about who was watching I walked over to her without a word to Adam. He watched me walk away in disbelief but said nothing. I did not care.

When Rachel saw me approaching a perplexed but knowing smile played on her lips. “Hello, Jacob.” She said smugly. “Why don’t you come with me really quick? I want to show you something.”

I followed her as she slid down from the table in her dark red dress and black high heeled boots. She led me to one of the corners near our first period class and then pulled me close to her and whispered in my ear, “Thank you again for Friday night.”

“Anytime.” I smirked arrogantly. I brushed some of her hair out of her face casually in a bold move. “What’d you want to show me?”

“This.” She said as she then pulled me so close to her that nothing else existed. She pressed her lips against mine in a controlling movement forcing me to respond to her kiss. I kissed her back as if I knew what I was doing while forgetting about everything I knew.  She quickly pulled away and then pushed me away when I tried to move closer.

“Not now, Jacob,” She said playfully.

“Later.” She added as if to make sure I did not lose interest, “I’ll see you in class.”

“Alright.” I breathed heavily. “I’ll see you later then.”

“Goodbye Jacob.” She simpered proudly and then disappeared in the crowd of people now rushing about the halls.

A flash of curly brown hair retreating to the girl’s bathroom caught my eye. Leah.

Monday Afternoon

I walked out of fourth period and headed over to my locker with a plan already forming in my mind. After depositing all my stuff I would then go in search of Rachel and join her for lunch for once. I had a right to now, did I not? She had chosen me, right?

I marched over to the lunch tables after I had finished with my locker and easily picked her out of the crowd. As I walked, the words from the day before echoed in my mind at a dull roar. But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Blinded. His. Eyes.

What did those words mean anyway? Oh well, who cared? Not me.

Before I could make it to where Rachel was sitting she hurried over to where I was and grabbed my hand. “Follow me.” She commanded seductively.

Naturally, I followed without question.

She pulled me off to the far side of the large outside eating area and pushed me playfully up against one of the pillars holding up the awning that covered the tables. “It’s later.” She purred.

She then placed her arms around my neck and pulled me down to her level. Without hesitation I pressed my lips against hers and held her close to me. Before a second had even passed I heard someone calling out my name - much to my annoyance.
