CONTEXT:
↳ You've been failing English so your parents decide to pay for a tutoring program at school. You're against the idea but end up giving into it. Turns out that your boyfriend is your tutor.STORY:
The library was filled with quiet whispers and the sound of shuffling books. I looked around for the table marked with the number 13. I walked between shelves incase the table was hidden. My feet shuffled against the thin carpets. Then, I felt a sharp pain on my foot. I looked down to see the corner of one of the light wooden bookcases. "Ouch." I clenched my teeth as I limped towards one of the nearby tables, looking down as I walked. Then, there was a thump. "My head.." I had bumped into someone's shoulder which had caused my glasses to poke the ridge of my nose and later fall off. My vision was a blur which partially distracted me from the pain of the red marks ingrained on the bridge of my nose. I couldn't sense who the figure in front of me was, until I heard his voice."Are you okay?!" I heard his sharp Aussie accent.
"Jake?" I muttered. I squinted towards him. I watched as he bent down and handed me my glasses. I slipped them on, getting a clearer view of who I had bumped into. "What're you doing here?"
"I'm here to tutor you, isn't that why you requested me?"
"Huh?" I squinted my eyes again, but this time in confusion. "I just know I came here to find my tutor for English."
"How about we sit down first?"
We walked to the table and took our seats, they were next to each other at one side of the wooden, sturdy table.
"So that's why my parents said tutoring wasn't going to be that bad," I scoffed.
"Yeah, because I'm here," he smiled. He wrapped his arms around my waist, hugging me tightly. "Shall we get started then?"
"I guess so," I sighed. He started reading over the text in the workbook. I only comprehended every few sentences, most of them went in one ear and out the other. "What the heck? Why are the questions about European Exploration?"
"Who says you can't analyze a social studies text is English?"
"I don't get it." My smile soon turned into a frown.
"What do you need help with?" He placed his hand over mine as I pointed to question 3. He nodded and explained the question to me until I understood how to find the answer and what the answer was. He was patient as I struggled to keep up with the page full of words.
I bit my lip as I stared at the next question. Jake's hand was still on top of mine, but his eyes were focused on his book. I peeked over at the book cover without him realizing, mouthing the words "Romeo and Juliet." I then looked back over to my problem. I didn't understand how I managed to become the type of person to not understand a simple question and my boyfriend was the type of person to casually read classic books for fun. Sometimes I wish that I had some of his brain cells, but maybe not his chaotic ones.
I started focusing on the text and the set of listed questions. Soon after, my pen started moving, filling in the bubbles and writing down sentences to the short responses. My little annotations filled the passage, making it seem more complete and professional. My thoughts kept flowing and I started to put two and two together to get my answers. I used some of the strategies Jake helped me learn when we answered the previous questions. My motivation continued until eventually, I finished the thin packet. I looked down at the paper as I lifted my pen. I felt Jake look towards me, up and down from my paper.
"You did it! And you didn't ask me for more help," he smiled.
"I did it! I did it!" I cheered.
"Shhh!" The librarian shushed loudly.
Quiet giggles passed through our lips. "I did it," I whispered.
"You did it and you did good." He kissed my cheek and flipped through the pages. I ended up getting some wrong, but I was glad that I had done much more than I had hoped.
