Cassidy collapsed in the chair next to her. Someone had threatened her. She couldn't believe it. Her life right now was filled with experiences and moments she never would have imagined.First, her sister was a supposed serial killer, with all the evidence pointing to her at the moment. Second, she had been in a holding cell, close to being charged with murder. And now, someone was threatening her. When was she going to catch a break?
Wyatt placed the note back onto the table and turned to her. It was odd that such a small piece of paper could make her both terrified and worried at the same time.
"Are you okay?" he asked, worry lacing his voice.
She couldn't look up at him. The pity in his eyes was not something she could stomach at the moment.
"No," she answered honestly, staring at her fingers.
The bracelet on her wrist caught her attention. It was nothing expensive, a simple black band with a heart in the center that could be bought at any street vendor. The bracelet wasn't what she focused on though; it was who gave her it that she thought about.
Her fingers traced the band slowly. Countless times over the past twelve years, Cassidy had stared at the bracelet and thought about Rose. She had wondered what Rose was up to. What had become of her? Was she safe? Did she get adopted?
Cassidy had prayed every night that she would get answers to those questions. She believed that knowing how her sister's life had turned out would make a difference. However, she couldn't have been more wrong.
"Someone threatened me," she said softly, coming to terms with what was going on.
Wyatt crouched in front of her so he could look her in the eye.
"Yes, they did. But we have officers watching you. No one is going to be able to harm you," he comforted her.
"Why would someone threaten me?" she asked, finally looking at him.
There was worry and concern in his eyes, but there was also confusion. He didn't know the answer to her question.
"This just helps prove that Rose might be the killer, doesn't it?"
Cassidy wasn't sure she could preach about Rose being innocent anymore. She didn't want to believe her sister was a killer but there were so many different elements in play now. Elements that pointed directly at Rose. Why else would she have been caught on the CCTV footage? Why would she not visit Cassidy if she knew where she was this entire time?
"It does make it seem more likely," Wyatt answered her truthfully.
"I need a shower," she said, pushing all other thoughts aside.
Wyatt looked confused at the abrupt change in subject but nodded and stood.
"Sure. I'll give Adam call and have someone come collect the evidence. I'll stay until the first shift of officers get here."
She nodded.
"Make yourself at home."
Cassidy mustered as much a smile as she could, but Wyatt didn't seem to buy it. He just gave her a sad smile back.
The door to her extra room was shut. She didn't like looking into the room. The stuffed animals had been in her house, arranged on her shelves. The memory of it was not something she wanted to be reminded of.
Her room was opposite, so she turned away and opened the door and flipped on the switch before venturing in. Everything was just as she had left it. Her bed beckoned her to get some desperately needed sleep, but a shower was the first thing she had on her mind.
