As the days went into weeks, Alise was finally forced to admit that her worse fears had come true. She could no longer ignore, or dismiss the strange new changes to her body and moods, that were leaving her unusually tearful and tired.
It took her all her effort to act normal whenever she was around Diego, and if he found her a little more subdued of late, he probably put it down to her having finally settled down and accepting her role as his wife, probably believing that he had finally tamed some of her wild defiant spirit, which was probably a good thing for Alise in one way, as it meant he wasn't giving her as much of her attention and time even in the bedroom.
But she knew this was not a secret she could hide from him forever, and he would soon find out. It was bad enough she was now with child, but knowing that it his child, made her feel even more ill at the thought of it, finding it an unbearable dilemma she didn't know how to get out of.
In the end she knew she had to share her burden with someone before it totally overwhelmed her.
Which was why she visited Padre Mendez in the safety of the chapel confessionary, where she had privacy from Diego's men, who had accompanied her, but now stood waiting outside by the chapel doors.
Padre Mendez was pleased to see Alise, He had tried to call on her a few times at the villa, but she seemed to be avoiding him, claiming that she was just going out, and could not stop, or she was in her room and a servant informed him that the Senora was sleeping and did not want to be disturbed which had him concerned.
Now as he got a glimpse of her face, he was shocked to see a certain gauntness, and she seemed fretful, making him wonder what that rogue of a husband had done to her. When Diego had returned after inflicted that shameful punishment on her. Padre Mendez had visited him and lectured him on his vile behaviour, but Diego had told him it was none of his business, and dismissed his concern, telling him to leave or he would find himself a priest without a parish.
And then when he had gone to see Alise that same day, she had assured him she was fine, and nothing Diego did to her was going to break her spirit, yet that didn't seem to be the case now, a few months later.
Alise my child, are you alright?" he asked in concern
"No Father, I am not; that is why I needed to come and see you to speak with you in privacy" Alise replied in an urgent hushed tone, still seeming a little distressed
"What is it Alise, what has happened?" he asked anxiously
"The worst thing that could possible happen father," Alise replied a little in despair, "I am carrying Diego's child"
As a priest and a man of God, Padre Mendez had mixed emotions about this news, now understanding why it might upset Alise, but also a little relieved it was not something worse, so his brow furrowed in a small frown
"I can understand this is perhaps something you find difficult to accept, but surely Alise you must have realised when you became Diego's wife, that this might occur?" he then pointed out.
"I tried hard not to think about its father, because the idea was so repugnant to me, and I suppose I thought that because there was no love in the marriage, God might spare me from producing children with him" Alise then admitted miserably.
"I am afraid that is not the way it works" Padre Mendez informed her a little ruefully
"But I do not want to have Diego's child, Father, how could I love anything that came from him, when all it will do will remind me of him?" Alise protested tearfully
The Padre shook his head sadly, "Alise, Alise, you are obviously still upset about your situation, and understandably so, but now this is occurred, you must try to overcome your hatred of Diego, for the child's sake" he attempted to encourage her.
