Follow the Light

Chapter 8

The Croods trudge behind Grug as he cautiously makes his way to the mountain. Eep walks alongside Guy, who is being carried by Grug in the log. Luna is positioned just behind Guy.

"That was too close. It almost caught us," Guy rants, furious at how he was only a toe away from death.

Feeling annoyed, Grug replies, "I was watching. We were fine."

Irritated, Guy criticizes the speed they were currently traveling at. "We've got to move faster. Do you people have any other speed aside from 'wander?' I'll take a shamble at this point.

Taking this opportunity, Luna leans forward slightly. She boops his nose lightly with her index finger, gaining his attention. "Hey, do you have a minute? How did the tiger and leopard fly?"

Hearing this, Eep also moves by Luna. "Yeah, how did they fly?"

Guy answers in the only way he thinks might be his method of escape. "I only share when I'm outside the log. I'm funny that way."

Luna giggles into the back of her hand. "I think you're plenty funny right now."

Turning red, Guy averts his eyes away from Luna's teasing ones.

Eep cracks her knuckles, having figured out how to get him out. "Leave this to me."

Hearing this tone, she backs off slightly, not wanting to be caught in the crossfire. Guy looks up at Belt, fearing for his own well-being. Luna watches as Eep walks behind Thunk, forcing him into the position between her and their dad.

Sounding concerned and alarmed, she shouts, "Hey Thunk, you have a spider on your face!"

Frightened, he lets out a loud yelp. Right after, Eep smashes him in the face, knocking him into Grug. As soon as Grug was hit by a flying Thunk, the log was sent flying. He shoots an annoyed look at Eep. Luna watches with wide eyes, lifting a hand to her face to hide her amused smile. All Eep does in response is shrug. "Oops."

Grug then realizes that the log was sent flying away, which meant Guy was no longer in his hold. "He's loose!"

As he goes to retrieve Guy, he steps on something sharp. An agony-filled look forms on his face. "AAAAAAAHHHHH! Do not step on those weird pointy rocks!"

Thunk looks at what he was talking about. "You mean these rocks?" He lifts a foot and steps on some smaller rocks, making a crunch sound from beneath his foot. "Ahh owww! Do not step on these rocks!"

Gran shoves him away. "Step aside, girls!" As soon as she steps on the rocks, she screams and jumps on her stick, falling over.

Frustrated, Grug yells out at them. "Hello? Nobody's listening? No one is listening. You cannot walk on those!"

As soon as he says these words, he turns around, seeing Guy on his feet. He faces his familiy but realization hits him. His eyebrows flew up and he flicked his head back towards Guy. They look at each other, look at Guy's feet, and look back up again.

"Arraughrragh come back here now." It almost looks like he's throwing a fit.

Gran off-handedly throws a comment. "Well, there goes our chance for survival."

"And our log!"

Luna sighs at this comment, throwing her hair over her shoulders. She walks forward a bit, looking to see what decision Grug would make. He chose to go after Guy, despite the pain waiting for him.

"Okay."

As he trudged on with every step, he cringes and bellows out his pain. Guy, who was still locked inside the log, hops away as fast as he could. Grug finally gets close enough, leaping and grabbing the log. This only serves to make Guy slip out and fall onto the coral patch below.
