Glitter and Sand

(back to before they start dating)

I sit on the floor of my apartment painting Chairman Meow's claws with glittery polish when a knock on the door is heard, startling my cat and causing the polish to smudge.

"Darn." I say as I stand up and make my way to open the door.

A smiling Finnick with his hands shoved in my pockets greets me on the other side of the door and I immediately invite him in.

"I smell nail polish." Finnick says as he scrunches up his nose (adorably I must add). "Wait, have you been painting your cat's claws?

"Don't judge." I say with a grin. "He looks pretty snazzy."

Finnick laughs and releases a hand from his pocket to stroke The Chairman's head. He then looks up at me, suddenly seeming slightly nervous.

"So, uh, I came here to ask you if you would maybe...wanna go out and do something? Like go to the beach maybe?"

"Go out?" I ask. "As in a date?"

"It can be what you want it to be." Finnick replies as a tinge of red sneaks it way onto his cheeks.

"Alright." I say smirking. "I'm not much of a beach guy but for you Finnick Odair I shall become one. Let's go."

I grab some towels and walk out of the door beside Finnick, casually slipping my hand into his.

When we step onto the warm sand I immediately see Finnick's face light up with joy, the calm wind pushing his hair around.

"The beach is a really special place for you, isn't it? I've seen all of the paintings and sea shells in your apartment." I say as I smell the strong scent of salt in the air.

Finnick nods and sinks his toes into the golden sand.

"Well, I grew up by the beach so I guess I've just been around it for most of my life. My parents would take me out here and we'd play on the rocks and build sandcastles."

I watch his eyes as they flash through his childhood memories. They gleam with happiness, but around the edges I can see a pang of regret and sadness. I wonder if maybe something had happened to one of his parents. Or maybe the nostalgia was just too much for him. I decide not to ask questions and instead take his hand.

"Ok, well then let's explore the rock pools before the tide comes in."

The happiness returns to Finnick's face as he nods and leads me through the rough sand to a group of rocks. I struggle climbing up so Finnick grabs my hand and pulls me up, and I try to hide my embarrassment. He just grins at me and leads me over pools of seaweed and tiny fishes. I see a shiny starfish that I bend down to pick up, but Finnick tells me it could be poisonous so I reluctantly pull away. I join him to stand at the end of the line of rocks and whilst he looks out at the gentle waves in front of us, I look at his face, admiring the way the sun shining on it adds extra definition to his features. He turns his head to catch me looking at him, but instead of acting creeped out, he smiles at me and I notice him studying my face as well. My heart picks up pace and I find myself subconsciously leaning towards him. However, before I can get too close I feel a sharp and painful pinch on my toe and jump back. To my embarrassment I realise that I have managed to jump into Finnick's arms.

"Relax, it's just a crab." Finnick says with a laugh as he holds me tightly.

"Just a crab? Those things are creepy, it could have taken off my toe. I'm getting away from here."

Although I enjoyed the grip Finnick held me in, I force myself to hop out of it and without thinking I jump off of the rocks and into the water below.
