Emma's POV:

Well, I finally told her everything. It definitely went better than I expected. I was looking down at Mila when my phone started to vibrate on the bedside table. I gently got up, making sure I didn't wake her up, and made my way to the balcony.

"Hey, Lance, what's up?" It's weird for him to be calling me at three in the morning.

"I just got a call from Chloe's mom and the council. Someone has been trying to break down the barrier to Alium again." Damn it. I would usually just shake it off from how often people try to do it, but something in his tone sounded very serious. I knew what he was saying shouldn't be taken lightly or in a joking manner.

"This isn't good." Then, before I could say more, he cut me off.

"It gets worse, though, Em." He sounded solemn.

"What happened?" Based on the tone of his voice, I know this isn't going to be good. I can feel it.

"It's Chloe's cousin Hector. Emma, He was killed; he's dead. He was the only one on guard at the time." My stomach immediately dropped. I'll have to go and check on the Delvauxs soon. I know they were all close to Hector. They are just a very tight-knit family.

"Do we have any leads at all?" I ask, hoping that we did.

"Yeah, but they only left one. They left a signature of sorts. They refer to themselves as Kalayavana." The fuck kind of name is that supposed to be?

"Okay? That's just great. I mean, seriously? They give us a lead, a lousy one at that, and it's just some corny ass villain name. Are you fucking kidding me?" I can feel my vampire side taking over. I'm infuriated.

"I know exactly what you're saying, Em. It's complete bullshit. I'm going to investigate what exactly happened here in a little bit. I know we hired these people, but I don't trust them to have investigated thoroughly right now. I feel like they had to have missed something. Anyway, I want you to go with me." I nodded my head as if he could see me.

"Oh, I already planned on going there. I'll meet you there in a couple of hours. Bye." I hung up right after saying that. I took a deep breath while closing my eyes. I let myself get lost in the cool breeze, gliding across my skin. Soon I felt warmth radiate around my midsection, and I started to smile. Mila.

"Hey, there, love. What are you doing awake?" She softly giggled and replied in the cutest groggy voice ever.

"The better question is, what are you doing awake?" She said in a sleepy playful manner.

"I got a call from my brother. Something has come up, and I have to leave soon to meet him, love." I could feel her frowning without even seeing her face. Her grip on me tightened, then loosened up. I took that opportunity, and I turned toward her. I found her looking up at me with big questioning eyes. They were swirling with a mixture of concern and sadness due to my leaving.

"Some, let's say, complications happened at one of the portals here, and we have to go investigate." I could see even more questions swirling through her tired eyes.

"What kind of complications?" I don't want to lie, especially not to her, but I don't want her to be scared. She already has enough on her plate to worry about, especially with that piece of shit, possibly knowing where she and her mom are. I could feel my body tense at the thought of him harming Mila or any of her loved ones. Whenever I see him, I will not hesitate to kill him. But, I forced those thoughts to the back of my head and came back to the present. We will cross that bridge when we get there.

"Nothing to fret about, my love. I can't divulge too much right now, honestly, because we don't know a whole lot. But also, I don't think I can legally share any of this information with you. However, you are my soulmate, so I will tell you as much as I can as soon as I can. I'll keep you updated when I know more. For now, just know that some complications have happened at the portal. Now, let's get you back to bed." I kissed her on the forehead and led her back to her bed.

"But, Emma." I shook my head at her as I tucked her in.

"I promise you; it is nothing you need to worry about. It's not that serious, okay?" She just defeatedly nodded her head, realizing she wouldn't get any more information from me.

"Fine, but as soon as it becomes serious, you are going to tell me immediately, okay?" I nodded my head. "I mean it, Emma, you are going to tell me." Her demanding tone shocked the hell out of me. I put my hands up in defense.

"I promise, Mila." She gave me a look with her eyebrow quirked up. "Shit, Mila, you can be scary sometimes. I swear, as soon as if/when it becomes serious, I will tell you." She had a "that's right" look on her face. Even with this promise I made to her, I still may never mention the severity of what was actually going on. At least right now, I'm not going to.

"Thank you. I really appreciate your honesty with me, Emma. I don't want there to be any lies between us or secretes kept." She tried to fight a small yawn but ultimately failed, while I ultimately failed at not being crushed by the weight of how horrible I felt lying to her.

"I love you, Mila, more than the universe can make space for." I hope her nerdy ass caught my pun. A saw a soft smile dance across her lips.

"I see what you did there." She let out a quiet chuckle.  "I love you too, Em, more than the universe can make space for." She mumbled out right before entirely falling back to sleep. I gave her a tender kiss on the forehead before heading out to my car. I hope we can find more information that will help us discover who this "Kalayavana" is and what they want. I may not know exactly what they have planned, but what I do know is that it's something sinister.
