HER EARLIEST memories are of fire.
Smoke, technically. A thick and heavy smog that strangles her lungs as she crawls to the waterside on a body of burns and fractured limbs.
For some time, even after she has been carried from the wreckage, Carah Macht functions on instinct alone. It takes more than a few long nights for her to process what they tell her.
She is in Arkanis, in the city hospice. The Last Hope crashed over Scaparus Port. Onboard were three passengers; she the only survivor.
The explosion took everyone else and with them, the final remnants of her adolescence. This is her last memory of innocence, of youth. Except she cannot remember much further back either. Her childhood is a blur. She knows nothing of her life before the crash and she is not sure she ever will. The flames swallowed everything. Her ship, her family, her identity are all gone but when she lies awake at night, staring into the Stygian shadows of an empty bed, she thinks of a different fire.
The second is larger, hungrier, an almost ritualistic conflagration excited to consume all it sees. It roars as though it has a voice of its own. The two fires never conflate, as much as she expects them to. She can always tell, when she remembers the flames, whether she is staring at the fire in Scaparus or the Other. They are distinct. Unique. Like one is a memory and the other is a dream but they are both real. She is certain of that.
Her recollection of the Other develops over time and although the greater image, the full memory, remains unassembled, she is able to decipher pieces of the puzzle. For one, she remembers a hum amid the roaring flames. A low, steady buzz. It shakes her to the core but an image appears when she hones in on the sound.
A beam of bright, blue light.
The light will show her the way.
