As a wedding gift, a female slave was given to Samuel Adams. He said multipled times, ". . . a slave cannot live in my house; if she comes, she must be free." From there, he wrote several emancipation letters, eventually being allowed to set her free. In the time it took for her to become free, he treated her as an equal member of the family.
