You know you do a lot of watching when you keep to yourself. That lot's of watching earns you automatic inside scoops on lives of people you don't even care about or even care to know. Eddie Kaspbrak is the master of this art form called observing. Taking note of people's body language and listening to all the drama that filters around the school.

It isn't until his quiet world is turned upside down by a certain Trashmouth in his health class, when Eddie realizes maybe making friends isn't all that bad.

Eddie watched as the boy known as the class clown whispered something into the ear of the fiery red head who sat beside him. She let out a little too loud of a giggle and quickly went to cover her mouth but it was too late.

"Would you like to share with the class what is so funny Ms. Marsh?" Ms. B questioned sternly. She was a very strict women with high morals but it didn't really help when she had diagrams of dicks and vaginas posted behind her.

"Um nothing Ms. B, just examining the...penis."

"That's what she said." Richie muttered, the whole class erupted into small fits of giggles. Eddie let out a small giggle himself as he watched Ms. B scold the pair, very flustered and angry.

He admired the bravery the two had, confidently throwing out such vulgar jokes especially in front of a teacher. After class Eddie waited until everyone else had left before exiting himself. He never liked bringing attention to himself or touching other people who could have serious diseases attached to them. There was an AIDS epidemic going on after all. As he made his way towards his locker he spotted the rambunctious pair again walking in his direction down the hall.

"Did you see the look on her face?" Beverly smiled widely, letting out a simply angelic laugh. She was very beautiful, heavily freckled face, bright blue eyes that could pierce any onlooker from afar, and a flowing floral dress that hung just below her knees. Eddie noticed the way she carried herself with such ease like she was Queen of the world, and the way she looked at Richie with such admiration. There was also one of Richie's jackets that hung loosely from her shoulders, if Eddie didn't know better he'd believe they were dating.

"Fuck yeah I did, I'll never get tired of making jokes in Health." Richie commented, mere moments later his dark eyes connected with Eddie's soft spoken ones. Eddie quickly averted his gaze and pushed past them, his cheeks flushing in embarrassment of being caught staring. Another con of being an observer was many rumors went around about you. Eddie was called a creep for always staring and lurking in the shadows, being the new kid also didn't help one bit. He has learned to ignore it and try and live his life around the living hell that is Mill Grove High School.

Although when Eddie pushed past the tall dark haired teen, he failed to notice the pair of owl eyes that followed him down the hall.

"Hey isn't that the new kid?" Richie asked as he watched Beverly paste a new sticker inside of her locker she had found on the floor.

"Yeah, poor thing. 4 months into school and I don't think he has any friends. I believe his name is Eddie or something."

Richie just hummed in response as he watched the smaller brunette fidget with his locker at the end of the hall.

"Hey Bev wanna hit Kings on the way home?"

"Sure, Can we stop by a gas station or something though and get a pack? I'm runnin low." She shook the box to reveal the last three cigarettes that still resided in the small box.

Richie wracked his brain for a snarky response but he didn't have one today so he just nodded in response as they walked down the hall towards 5th period. He had short brunets with wide chestnut eyes occupying his mind at the moment.

"Hey Ma, I'm home." Eddie called out into the empty void of his house. Nothing. Eddie shrugged, silently praising whatever god that had granted him this alone time. He quickly discarded his shoes by the door along with his heavy backpack. As he strolled into the kitchen, Eddie noticed a bright yellow sticky note attached to the fridge

'Gone to the store be back soon,
Don't forget to take your meds!!
-Love Mommy
'

Eddie rolled his eyes at the note and just stuck it back onto the fridge. He hasn't called her that since grade school. The teen grabbed an apple from the counter and then quickly made his way towards his room, the quiet patter of his sock padded feet being the only noise sounding through the house.

Eddie let out a long sigh as he collapsed onto his bed. This was his sacred place, where he could be himself. No looming responsibility, over protective Moms, or High School bullies. Just him and these four walls decorated in posters and pictures he's collected over the years.

After a few minutes of examining his neat room Eddie flipped onto his stomach, taking another bite of his apple. After pinpointing his journal he snatched up the fading leather book and opened to a clean page. Free of any words or scrambled ideas, a new page where he could spill his thoughts.

Dear Friend,

I'm not really sure what to say to you. I'm writing to you because she said you'd listen and understand. Please don't try to figure out who I am. I don't want you to do that. I just want to be held in the security of thinking people like you exist. Such as if you met me you wouldn't think I'm the weird new kid who spends half his life in the hospital. And I wouldn't make you nervous, I hope it's ok for me to think that. You see, I haven't really talked to anyone this past summer or school year besides my Mom. So far High School isn't any better, and I've calculated that I have exactly 345 days left until I graduate my senior year. Hopefully it goes by sooner than expected and I can leave this shit hole of a town behind. Anyways, for now I'll leave you to your own devices. Until next time.

-E.K.
