"You will never be able to escape from your heart. So it is better to listen to what it has to say." - Paulo CoelhoSanem
He pressed his finger against my lips and pushed me back into the shadows. My heart was beating so loudly, I feared it could be heard in the sudden quiet. He pressed his lips against my ear and despite the imminent danger, I had to suppress a full-body shiver.
"Don't make any noise."
"What are we going to do?" I whispered back.
"I'm going to distract it long enough for us to be able to get out of here."
He placed Leyla on the ground again and pulled his shirt over his head. My eyes had adjusted to the darkness enough to make out his powerful muscles flexing with his movements.
This was a really bad time to be lusting after him.
I tried to concentrate on what he was saying. "Its breath is poison, the blood is poisonous too. The only way to kill it is to cut off all the heads."
I sensed a but.
"But?"
"But it regenerates the heads almost as soon as they're loped off so it's pretty much impossible to kill."
He said this in a flat tone while he ripped his shirt apart.
"Here." He wrapped part of his shirt as a makeshift mask around my nose and mouth. "If it releases its breath try to hold yours as long as possible. This won't hold for long."
His voice was decisive and matter of fact. This was the voice of the Alpha, in control and charge but underneath it, I detected the fear and I knew he feared for me, not himself. It was present in the slight tremble of his fingers as they secured the fabric around my face, and the way his breathing hitched.
"It's going to be fine," he said reassuring me as much as himself.
He wrapped another piece of fabric around Leyla's head but not his own.
"I'm going to distract it long enough for you to slip through then you run for cover."
"No!" I gripped his arm in fear. That thing was easily twice his size.
"It's the only way," he whispered reassuringly. "Wait until the way is clear then take cover behind the bar. Then I'll come back down and get her," he gestured at Leyla. "We'll figure out the rest when we get out of here. We stand a chance out in the open, we can't let it corner us down here."
Silently I moved away and flattened myself on the wall next to the staircase. I peeked around the corner and up the stairs. For the second time that night, I let my dark power run free. I probed carefully but there was nothing, nothing to latch on to. It was nothing but a dark void as if the monster didn't even exist.
"Baby, what are you doing?" Can asked me, his voice full of wonder.
Oh, no. I screwed my eyes shut. I forgot about his night vision...
"Nothing. It's not working."
He was quiet for a long moment. I could feel his searching gaze roaming over my face. Probably wondering what kind of freak I was.
"It's not sentient," he finally said, guessing correctly how my power worked. I felt his gaze lingering on me for a while longer.
"Are you ready?" He finally said.
I shook my head. I was paralyzed with fear for him.
"I'll be okay," he assured me again and placed an intense kiss on my forehead.
