Some of the leaves were brushing themselves against the wind, their thin arms barely holding onto the branch as they weakened. Eventually, they began to fall like the first winter snow, the grass dotted with patches of leaves.
Although Tohru invited you once again in class for lunch, you couldn't bring yourself to forcefully insert yourself into her life after one dinner. The Sohma family was odd, you thought, they seemed so dysfunctional and yet they felt connected mysteriously. You didn't know what had brought you to this conclusion but a part of you felt that it was right. It didn't seem like Shigure was their legitimate parent, rather, he was a caretaker in their home.
You gnawed at the tip of the straw. With their distant personalities, it was a miracle to see that Tohru was the only thing sewing them together. You were a bit envious. She seemed so happy and carefree, almost as if her problems were solved by simply being nice to others. You couldn't understand her logic but you found yourself cursing at your inappropriate behavior. Perhaps she didn't want to bring up her own problems so that she could stay happy around others. You tapped your pen against your journal, hearing the sound of your straw sucking up nothing but small droplets at the bottom of the carton.
. . . "Why are you looking at me with those eyes? You ungrateful child!" She gripped onto your hair tightly as she brought you closer to her face, her heavy breathing scratching against your sore cheeks, "Who the hell do you think you are? How could you be born like this?"
"You aren't even my daughter."
You squeezed the carton tightly, your nails digging into the thin layer of material as you watched the puffs of cloud float through the sky. You wondered if it was possible to rid yourself of those memories. It seems like so long ago that you left the household and chased after a part-time job. If it wasn't for your transfer to Kaibara's middle school section, you wouldn't have gotten into high school at all.
You dropped the carton of juice onto the grass, pressing your knees against your chest as you leaned your head against the top of them. Was it worth looking for your parents? You asked yourself, your hand reaching up to grip at your (h/c) hair. Would they want to see their former daughter?
. . . "My wife has been suffering from a lot of stress now," the older man tugged on his hair in frustration, his eyes looking up at his younger friend, "We had to lock that door. If it wasn't kept locked then my wife would begin wailing. I'm starting to wonder if I need to take her to see a therapist."
"I see. . . Perhaps she's going through a lot after the first death of your child. It's understandable to see a mother in grief."
The man let out a small, nervous chuckle, turning his head away from his friend, "Y-Yeah. . . I'm sure it's that. I'm just hoping that she's going to recover soon enough. What about you? Is everything okay with Kana?"
". . . Everything is fine, we've also had a fair share of disagreements and struggles but it's nothing too serious now."
The man breathed out a sigh from underneath his breath, "I pray for both of us then. If God allows us good fortune. . ." The man prayed, clasping onto his hands tightly, "I pray that they let my wife be free of her grief."
