Swimming In Darkness

Kakashi’s POV

It has been three days since Yori went to the hospital. I am with her now, observing her peaceful face become slightly hollow over the past few days, being here gives me comfort, as I can hear her soft breathing, knowing she is alive. Obito and Rin were here earlier, they brought flowers and a get well card, they got up me for not doing the same. I simply ignored them and stayed at the hospital until visiting hours were over and even more some. 

I remember what happened after I found Rin and Obito.

Flashback~

‘Where in hell are they?! I find them so easily when I don’t need them then when I do they leave the face of the earth!’ I growl frustrated. I have been to both their houses, the training grounds, I am now heading to the park near the academy. 

“I hope Yori is okay, she didn’t look well at training” I heard Rin say to someone. I turn to the direction I hear her voice. I walk into a dango shop, seeing her converse with Obito. I run to them, “What do you want Kakashi” Obito says frowning. I ignore him, “Yori almost drowned, she collapsed in pain and sensei brought her to the hospital” “What! We must go there!” “Yes, I hope she is okay!” 

We all run to the hospital, Rin gets pulled into the operation room where Yori is, ‘at least Rin will be able to tell us what happened afterwards’ Obito and I sit in the waiting room. Obito is wiping his eyes, ‘what a crybaby, pfft, some Uchiha’. “You and Yori close?” I ask randomly, ‘I shouldn’t have said that’ “Yes, I care for her so much, she is like my best friend…” He continues to talk about her, a bitter feeling fills my body as I tune him out. “… I hope she is okay.” “I hope she is okay too.” “Is Kakashi getting soft now” “Shut up!” we both stand up readying our punches, my fist grabbing the collar of his shirt. 

“Boys! This isn’t the time.” Minato sensei says walking over to us from the operating room. “What’s happened!” “Is she okay!” We both ask simultaneously. Rin walks out as well frowning. “I will let Rin tell you, Rin?” “What happened to her must of occurred during the mission to Suna. She was poisoned somehow. The poison used was nusumu. It steals the chakra from your body and gives it to the person who made the poison, if it is left untreated it will kill you. The poison started in her hand, eating away at her chakra points spreading out through her body causing the lethargic demeanour she had over the past days. We have been able to mend her chakra points and give her chakra boosts while also moving the poison. We will have to get in analysed because it is a forbidden technique from the grass village. We need to prepare more antidotes in case the poison is used again.” ‘Wow, she has done well to conceal her pain, but why would she do that? That baka!’ “Is she going to be okay?” Obito asks, looking at Yori who is lying on a stretcher being moved to another room. Her right hand is bandaged up to her shoulder to her chest, several machines are attached to her and is also being wheeled. We follow her to room 303. “She will be fine, we have managed to remove all the poison but she wont be able to use chakra for a while. I hope her wolf form doesn’t need chakra.”

End Flashback~

‘She is an absolute idiot! Gah! Why am I so worried? Ninjas can die on missions, it shouldn’t bother me, its a natural thing that can’t be helped.’ I absentmindedly stroke her bandaged hand. “Worried?” I jump out of my seat, leaving the slight electric feeling I felt when stroking her hand. ‘Pfft, she must have a lightning affinity’. “NO!” I shout quickly, “I was joking” Minato sensei says half-heartedly. ‘I seriously doubt it’. 

“She will be fine Kakashi. You know its unusual for you to be late, better yet miss our training and last mission, luckily it was a minor one” he smirks at me. ‘Crap! I totally forgot! See this stupid baka got herself hurt now I worry about her’ mentally reprimanding myself. “Sorry sensei” I mumble looking away from him and the unconscious girl on the bed. “Kakashi, are you going to join us on our next mission, it starts in five minutes. Or will you be here watching Yori sleep. Imagine what Yori would think, you have been missing training and missions to watch her. Kakashi’s a stalker~” I blush feverishly. “W-WHAT!!! No! I will go right now! You better not tell her that sensei! It isn’t like that! You are just like Obito about us living together!” “Why are you so defensive?” he asks playfully. “I-uh-I- Gah!” “Come on, I will take us to the others” he walks over to me, putting his hand on my shoulder, teleporting us to the rest of the team.

We arrive, I walk hastily away folding my arms in the process, showing off my usual glare. “Wow! Kakashi actually showed up!” Obito taunts. “Shut it! You are always late, you can’t talk!” “I never miss training lessons nor missions.” “It was one mission!” “Ha! ‘The oh so great ninja rule following’ Kakashi Hatake broke the ninja rules, more than I ever have!” “You have no room to start spouting off that crap Uchiha crybaby.”

“Obito, Kakashi, please calm down, if Yori was here she wouldn’t want this nor would you be doing this.” Rin says looking at us pointedly. I huff and look away, observing the Hokage’s faces where I heard Yori sing. “Sorry Rin. You are right, we wouldn’t be fighting but Yori and Kakashi would be” Obito says slyly, causing him to sweat drop at Rin’s frown and reprimandings.

We have finished the mission and now have all departed to head home. ‘I swear if that cat ever runs away again I am going to kill it.’ I growl unlocking our apartment door. ‘What? Since when have I referred to my apartment to ours?’ I shake my head getting rid of these thoughts, slamming the door behind me as I enter the apartment. I walk to my room, disregarding the fact I haven’t had dinner. I look at Yori’s door and frown ‘Why do I feel so guilty? She was the one who got herself poisoned’. I walk into my room and get ready for sleep. ‘I hope she wakes up soon.’

I wake up the next morning, get ready for the day and head straight to the hospital. ‘I hope she is awake now’. I think hopefully. Suddenly I stop in my tracks. ‘Why?!? Why does she make me feel like this? I shouldn’t cater for her whims, I shouldn’t be rushing to the hospital, I don’t have a reason to. Just because she is on my squad doesn’t mean I should care for her, she was easily put on the squad, she could easily be taken off’ my internal rant turns sour. 

I frustratedly punch the tree that was beside me, leaving trickles of blood to pour out of my knuckles. ‘Gah! This makes my head hurt!’ I rub my head, walking to the local tea shop to have some breakfast. ‘I should take my time, I haven’t had anything to eat nor drink for a while.’ 

I begin to think of the times Yori and I have been together, ‘we trained together - we still train together, we lived together - we still live together, she seems to be always near me and when she is it makes be weary and happy - those shouldn’t mix with each other, what the hell! It sounds like I like her! What crap! Emotions are for the weak, are for ninja scum’ I grab my head in frustration and collide it with the table in the tea shop to which I arrived momentarily ago; scaring the patrons inside. 

I stay with my head down grumbling useless things to myself. Minutes later I feel a familiar chakra signature, I look up and see Rin running to me. She stops in front of me, I look at her in the eyes raising an eyebrow at her, indicating I want her to tell me why she is here. Every feeling in my body does a 180 flip at what she tells me, I stand up and grab her hand exiting the tea shop running towards our destination. 

“She’s awake.”
