Chapter 4 - Gathering of Halves

Clap-

Clap-

"Attention here please." Tanaka clapped his hands to gain the attention of the club members, old and new.

He looked around in satisfaction as he saw that all eyes were on him. "Our Coach, coach Ukai would like to say a couple of things before we move on," Tanaka nodded his head towards a middle-aged man in a tracksuit.

"Woah, he must be our dads' coach," I look towards Yuki who's eyes shone with reverence despite having a frown on his face.

"Ahem, as you've heard, I am Coach Ukai and will be overseeing all of you until your final year. I'll only briefly explain how we divide you into the groups," He lifted up three fingers. "One, skill. Two, compatibility and three, ability."

"Unlike other schools, we see highly favourably on individuals with great teamwork skills. Therefore selfishness is disapproved and punishment will be given accordingly." The Coach stressed the latter sentence. "No one can play volleyball enjoyably by themselves," He added.

"Moreover we also prioritise of skilled players. Including diamonds in a rough," He looks towards the newer batch of first years.

"Though our way may not be fair. By putting the strong with the strong and the weak with the weak. Why do you think we made it that way? It's so that the weak could grow stronger. If the weak were to be on the same team with the strong the weak will only rely on the strong and neglect their own development, as a coach I would like to avoid such a case to happen." Coach Ukai shook his head with a sigh.

"You may not believe my words but most of the players on our rooster used to be weak." Gasps of surprise could be heard among the 1st years.

"Them? Weak?" A first-year scoffed in disbelief.

"Growing stronger does not depend on only your innate ability but as well as your tenacity, perseverance and determination," Another middle-aged man looked towards Coach Ukai and took over. "Similarly how talent means nothing without practice or experience," he added.

"Despite our efforts and the abundance of talented players, we still could not pass the barrier of the first day at nationals." At those words, the faces of our seniors turned sour.

"Fret Not! We-, less than 30 years ago we lost our wings. But we managed to overcome that and slowly started to spread our wings to show our resolve." He pushed up his glasses and looked towards the faces of the determined crows with a smile.

"With our wings, our motto is to fly." Those words echoed inside of the gymnasium.

His words sent electric waves onto my skin.

"Iva- Y-Yuki-" I quickly turned to see him clench his fist.

'It looks like someones excited but.. he's not the only one. And the tension is enough to even rival the ones in animes.'

Fweet-

"Alright hatchlings, surround the centre court. Those who have been tested to the right, those who have not been tested please stand to the left including scouted members. Seniors are to be at the sides."

"There was a test before this?" I scrunched my face in confusion and looked towards the gymnasium's watch to see that it's almost 10 am. "Every 1st year was in the auditorium before this though,"I mumbled as we talked to the left of the court.

"There was but it took place even before we got to Japan," Yuki answered and took out a leaflet from his bag.

"Details are in here, I'll be right back. I'm going to buy some milk. You want some too?" He handed me the leaflet before eyeing me up and down with a frown. "I'll just get you some juice."
