CHAPTER 5 - NO HOLDING BACK
"Oh, we're on the receiving end," Li Wei took off his glasses and placed it near our water bottles.
"Won't you need that?" Yuki pointed.
"It's just for fashion," Mark teased.
"What are you talking about? I'm as blind as a bat!" Li Wei scoffed and pulled out a pair of sports specs out of a protective case. (1)
"Oho, I have one of those but for outdoors," I cheerfully chimed.
"I'll take the centre back!" I enthusiastically and quickly stood at the previously empty spot.
All of them except Yuki who moved to the front left stared at me weirdly but choose to remain silent.
'Was there something wrong about what I said?' I tilted my head in confusion.
"What's a middle blocker doing at the back?" The opposing team's middle blocker taunted which earned a couple of snickers from the spectators.
'Oh. I forgot.'
Yuki couldn't help but sighed as he saw me looked away in embarrassment.
"Says the person who'll be replaced by the libero once at the back," Mark countered which caused the middle blocker to be flustered.
Fweet-
The whistle was blown indicating the start of the match. The first serve came from the Korean Wing Spiker.
THANG-
[Blue 0-1 Yellow]
The sound of the ball hitting the waxed wooden floor echoed in the gymnasium. Shooking both players and spectators.
'That was quick.' I clicked my tongue. He served as soon as the whistle was blown.
I briefly glanced towards Yuki and he nodded. 'I got it.'
For the second serve, everyone is far more alert.
Fweet-
I licked my lips and waited for the ball to contact his hand. 'NOW!' I thought and swiftly rushed to the left.
"N-NICE RECEIVE!" Yuuma stammered as he expected to lose at least four to five points before his team could get used to the serve.
Yuki quickly followed up and beautifully completed a dump, ending their serve and earned glares from the opposite side.
[Blue 1-1 Yellow]
'That must've felt nice,' I thought.
"How's refreshing," Mark had a satisfied mocking yet elegant smile.
'He's totally pissed.' I glance towards Li Wei who simply shrugs his shoulders and rotated to serving position.
Fweet-
Li Wei played around with the ball like a basketball before jumping and hitting the ball last second. A huge difference compared to the first serve.
[Blue 2-1 Yellow]
"J-Jump Floater," Jun gasped as he turns around and stared at Li Wei with wide eyes.
Yuki turned around and gave a thumbs up. 'He's impressed,' I couldn't help but snort.
"Nice Serve. One more!" Yuuma cheered from the side.
Fweet-
"Move to the back. Jump floaters usually touch the back," One of the opposing players warned.
"How naive," Mark shook his head in disapproval.
At Mark's words, Li Wei switched to a normal jump serve whilst in mid-air.
The ball hit the net crossing over to the other side.
"Shit!" One of the players on the other side panicked as all of them were too far back.
Pam-
Pam-
Pam-
The ball fell and bounced off the wooden floor before rolling off.
[Blue 3-1 Yellow]
"This is the best to ten right?" I looked towards Mark whos on my left who simply nodded.
Fweet-
"Out!" The referee announced.
[Blue 3-2 Yellow]
"We need to be cautious. The one serving right now is Nobuo Myoujin. I heard that he got invited to the All Japan Youth Training Camp this year along with the guy on the front left, Kenji King," Nuyuki warned and pointed to the two wing spiker and middle blocker respectively.
"I heard that they'll be ranked in the top 5 for high school players depending on how well they play during official matches," Jun added.
"Oho. I wonder how his serves are like." My arms started to sting with anticipation.
Fweeet-
'Aw. It's just a normal serve.' I pouted.
This time Mark was the one who received the serve with a dig.
Yuki got into position and set the ball to Jun.
"One touch!" Kenji yelled out.
The red-haired wing spiker quickly got under the ball and did an emergency set towards Nobuo who hits a cross towards Li Wei despite being blocked by three players.
Thak-
[Blue 3-3 Yellow]
"Well, he ain't a scouted member of nothing," Yuki pinched the bridge of his nose and clicked his tongue.
"You're not wrong," I sighed.
"Two players ranked in Japan and One with a nasty serve furthermore being able to do emergency sets with efficiency. I'm glad I came to Japan," I said.
They looked towards me in shock and couldn't help but be just as motivated.
"I've actually been holding back, now we just gotta show them who's boss," Mark pulled out a rubber band in his pocket and tied his hair into a mini ponytail.
"It's been a while since I get to play more aggressively. Since we got a good setter, let's make it a chaotic one." Li Wei clenched his fist in excitement and looked towards Yuki with a mischievous smile.
"Hmph. Now you're seeing my greatness," Yuki joked but his eyes sparkled with greed as he thinks of the sets he could use to bring out everyone's potential.
'He's excited that he doesn't need to hold back anymore,' I chuckled.
