"Mama, my legs hurt and my stomach is begging for food." I complain. We had been walking ever since we left, without a break.
"Drogi, we will rest soon, and then eat some bread." She assures me. I sigh and continue walking.
Throughout the trip, the realization that most of my family had died dawned on me. I had cried so much, that I didn't have any tears left. Mama just kept walking, checking every now and then to making sure we were going the right direction.
"Mama, it's dark. Can we sleep?" I persisted.
She turns around. "Fine, drogi." She sets a blanket down and a pillow. Then she rips a piece of bread off and gives it to me.
"Dziękuję, Mama." I gratefully eat the bread and shut my eyes, drifting off to sleep.

Concentration camps for slave laborers and the extermination of civilians went hand in hand with German rule of a conquered nation. For example, within one day of the German invasion of Poland, Hitler was already setting up SS "Death's Head" regiments to terrorize the population.
