I've finished showering and gotten dressed when I hear him calling to me through the bathroom door. I tap at the door so he knows I'm there.
"Can I borrow a few things from you?" he asks, wrapping a towel low on his waist, drawing my attention to his toned stomach muscles. I stare down at him, letting my mind drift back to thoughts of us clinging to each other as the water rushed over us in the shower.
"Sure, what do you need?" I snap out of my day dream.
He rattles off a list, "a hairbrush, some eye make up, toothpaste...do you have any shirts that might fit me?"
I laugh as a devilish idea comes to me and I leave to gather what he needs, passing things into him through the door.
"What's this?" he calls out before opening the door. He stands, wearing a huge yellow sweater with a tear near the collar. I've had it for years, it looks less massive on him, but inconceivably more yellow. He turns to the mirror and admires his reflection. "It looks good actually."
"It's very comfortable," I giggle. I pull out a pair of oversized sunglasses and place them on his face completing the look. "There, perfect," I say. He smiles so big and broad his mouth forms a rectangle.
We step out into the crisp morning air, under a canopy of yellow and orange leaves, and we walk the two blocks to the restaurant. He wraps his arm around my waist and I feel his fingers slide under my shirt to touch bare skin as his fingertips pull me closer to his side.
I haven't been to this cafe in over a year. The last time I was there, I broke up with my boyfriend in a very public scene on the patio. I threw his phone- filled with other girls messages and pictures- directly at his head, but missed him, sending it crashing to the ground. Then I told him I was moving to London. Two weeks later, I did.
We take a seat on the same patio, near where it happened and I push the thoughts away as I look at Tae, smiling behind the dark glasses looking around at the location.
"There are so many nice trees here, it's almost like it isn't even in the city. I only ever get to see tall buildings when I'm in New York, but this is nice." A waiter sets two drinks down in front of us.
"I've always loved this area. It's similar to where I grew up. It's totally different to where my flat is in London. That's more urban and artsy, and this is more like a place to raise a child." Suddenly he chokes on his drink and I realize I might have said something wrong. "I'm sorry, are you OK?" He smiles from behind his glasses,
"Perfectly. But I thought this was orange juice, what is it?!"
"Oh sorry, it's called a Mimosa, it has champagne in it." I blush. He toasts his glass to mine and smiles. "What do you have to do today?" I ask. He leans in tracing a line on the rim of his glass with a long delicate finger.
"I don't remember. I'll have to call Soo Yun and see where I'm supposed to go." He reaches to pull out his phone and his face drops as he looks at the screen. He goes quiet.
"What is it? Are you late for something?" I ask. He swallows hard, staring at the screen and my concern grows.
"I - I had the ringer off." His brows furrow as he looks at the phone. "I've made a mistake." He scans through messages and I watch the reflection in his glasses as he looks from texts to missed calls to an image. Once again, the fear returns to the pit of my stomach. What's happened? What does he mean? I sit quietly, with baited breath, waiting for him to speak.
"I posted a picture online... But I- I posted the wrong picture," he stammers.
"When?" I ask, needing more information.
"When you fell asleep this morning. I mean after we first woke up..." He's still looking at his phone. He looks up at me, worried. "I'm sorry. I posted a picture of us at the bridge last night, kissing." My eyes grow wide. "I meant to post the first one, of us at the bridge, but not the one of us kissing." I feel relieved it wasn't worse, but I need to make sense of why he looks so concerned.
"OK. Is that not something you do?" I'm still confused.
He looks up at me, taking off the glasses to look into my eyes."I can't. None of us can have girlfriends publicly. I mean, we do, but we can't put anything online and the management is not happy. I have to call Soo Yun but I'm a little bit scared."
"Can't you just take it down?" I ask wishfully, knowing full well how the internet works. He shakes his head.
"They already took it down but it's out there. I'm so sorry this will bring you trouble." I shake my head.
"It's OK, really. No one knows who I am. I'm just unhappy it has to be this way for you." I signal the waiter and whisper to him to get our order to go as Tae listens to voicemails, grimacing.
I pay the bill and take the bag of food. Tae follows behind me out of the restaurant still listening to voicemail. I lead him back toward the flat, the mood now so different from only an hour before when it felt like we could take on the world together. He makes a call, to RM first.
"Namjoon? I'm sorry, I made a mistake. I just chose the wrong image, it was late and dark..." He listens to RM for a long while as we walk. He smiles up at me with a relieved look as he listens. I smile back trying to be hopeful. We turn the corner and walk up the steps to the door of the flat. I have a feeling something isn't right and I turn around on the stairs.
I see something across the street, a man, a stranger, is taking pictures of us. I look over at him confused and I point him out. Tae's smile drops, his expression changes and his head ducks down. He ushers me inside quickly shutting the door.
"What was that?" I ask confused.
"This is what I don't want you to have to deal with," he apologizes. "People will know who you are and sometimes it's not very nice."
"I think you should call Soo Yun now and find out what we can do." He nods. He takes a seat and I excuse myself. "I'll make us some tea." I escape into the kitchen to think and to give him privacy.
