Nina placed the plate of pancakes, bacon, and eggs in front of her grandmother on the medium-sized wooden round table. Her Grandmother thanked her. Nina wanted to cook for her grandmother since she was allowing Nina to stay until she got back on her feet.
It had been two weeks since she had moved back, and she was trying her best to settle in.
"How's the job search going?" Grandma asked.
Nina sighed. "Not so good."
Nina didn't have a degree. All she had was her high-school diploma. She had wanted to go to college, but she had fallen in love with Nick. He had promised her that he would always take care of her and she didn't have anything to worry about.
He had made it seem like they would be together until their dying days and Nina had foolishly believed him like a big dummy.
"Have you tried the mall?" Grandma asked.
Nina had indeed filled out applications for them all, but got no callbacks. When she reached out to inquire about the job positions, they informed her that they had already been filled.
Nina munched on her piece of bacon.
It was hard for her to find any job when she never had to work when she was with Nick. He had provided for them both. He would get mad when she mentioned that she wanted to go back to school.
She was young back then and thought being with the biggest up-and-coming drug dealer was in her best interest. At the time, he was a beacon of light in her world, but it was all a fantasy that she had conjured up.
"I called them and they said the positions I applied for were already taken." She took a bite out of her eggs.
"You'll find something. Keep trying," she replied with a smile.
Nina's grandmother always made her believe she could accomplish anything. So she smiled back at her and nodded.
After eating their breakfast, her grandmother left to go to a doctor's appointment. Nina hated being left alone, since her thoughts kept straying from what she used to have before she got divorced.
Nina picked up her cell phone to call her best friend Tasha. They had barely kept in contact because Nick liked to control where she went and who she spoke to. He was so paranoid since the Feds were always watching them.
Nina let out a puff of air and called the number. She was about to hang up when she heard a hello on the other end of the line.
"Hey," she said. "It's me, Nina."
Nina heard a screech and smiled.
"I'm so mad at you. I haven't heard from you. Did he take away your phone again?" she asked.
Nina sighed. "Yes, he did, but that's not important."
"Why? What's going on?"
"I...I finally divorced him," she said, holding back tears.
"Are you serious?" she asked. "I'm so proud of you."
"Well, it was easy, since he didn't want to be with me anymore."
"Why not?"
"Can you come over?" she asked. "I missed my best friend and I haven't seen you in so long."
"I can come over after work," she said.
"Are they hiring where you work?"
"Actually, they are. I can tell you about it when I get there."
"Okay, bye," she said, ending the call.
It was almost an hour later when Tasha showed up at her door. Nina gave her a hug, and they both cried tears of happiness at finally being able to see each other again.
Nina led Tasha over to the couch and she went to the refrigerator and poured them both a glass of lemonade. Tasha thanked her for the drink when she sat back down and handed the class to her.
Nina stared at her best friend, who still looked like she hadn't aged since the last time she saw her. She sported a kinky curly bun with her hair tied up. Her makeup really accentuated her high cheekbones and thick lips.
"I can't believe you're finally rid of his ass," Tasha said, with happiness in her tone.
"I am too. He was horrible."
"What were you saying about him not wanting to be with you anymore?" she asked, with inquisitive eyes.
Nina sighed. "He cheated on me with my Naomi."
"Naomi? You're twin sister?"
Nina nodded. "He was having an affair with her for GOD knows how long."
"Wow, how could they do that to you?" she asked, frowning. "Are they still together?"
"Yes, they plan on getting married," she said, glancing down at her drink.
Tasha stared back at her with wide eyes. "I'm going to kill them."
Nina laughed. "You would never get passed his security," she said, with air quotes. "I'm happy that I can get away from him but I'm scared for Naomi."
"You're still scared for her after all she's done?" she asked, taking a sip of her lemonade.
"Yes, because she is still my baby sister by two minutes. He will ruin her life as he did mine. I begged her not to be with him, but she wouldn't listen."
"Can you contact her?"
"Yes, but she won't pick up any of my calls," she said. "I want her to come home and be safe with me and Grandma."
Tasha placed her hand on Nina's shoulder and squeezed. "We'll figure something out."
Nina leaned back on the couch. "Thanks."
"You said you needed a job, right?" she asked, taking the last sip of her drink.
"Yeah, where do you work?"
"I work as a maid for a millionaire," she said.
Nina frowned at her words, and Tasha laughed.
"Don't worry. He isn't hiring for another maid but for a nanny for his daughter."
Nina's eyes lit up at that. She had experience with kids and babysitting. She had also worked as a nanny before she got with Nick to help pay the bills when she was staying with her grandma. She wouldn't even think of it as a chore. It would be the perfect job for her if she could get hired.
"Cool. Do I have to fill out an application?"
Tasha shook her head. "You have to call his assistant and they will set up an appointment for an interview."
"That's great. Do you have the number?"
Tasha gave her the number and Nina put it in her contacts to give them a call.
"Thanks, I haven't had much luck in the job area."
"That's what best friends are for," she said, grinning.
"Enough about me," she replied. "Tell me what's been happening with you."
Nina smiled back at her best friend as she explained what was going on in her life. She couldn't wait to set up the appointment for the Nanny job.
