Chapter 7

---Child’s POV---

I looked through the viewer and frowned a bit, shaking my head slightly. “Can you hold it up more?” The view became better and I smiled, pressing on the button. A flash created black spots before our eyes and we shook our heads slightly, laughing it off.

“Thanks Ashley!” I laughed while lowering my camera, clicking back to look at the picture. I jumped excitedly while I let out a squeal. “I think I’m gonna show the Alpha!”

Ashley looked over my shoulder at the picture and smiled, nodding slightly.

“No problem.” She smiled back before turning around. “Oh!” She exclaimed, whipping her head back towards me, her brown hair swinging to the left side of her head. “Tell him I helped.” She said, her eyes slightly pleading.

I nodded at her and she grinned back. Her big, blue eyes were sparkling with the happiness that everyone felt today. “That way, if he likes the picture, he’ll like me too because I helped you.”

A laugh bubbled up in my throat and I didn’t stop it from coming out. We were standing at the edge of the forest, resting after our search for anything beautiful to take a picture of. We grinned like made to each other while she set the ladybug on a leaf. We watched it climb up the thick tree trunk and open its translucent wings before it took flight.

I pulled the camera up and placed the thick strap on my neck before I waved at Ashley and our friends, who had come out to join us. Turning around, I quickly stepped into the forest, looking around with a smile while imagining the Alpha’s reaction when I showed him the lovely pictures I made.

There wasn’t a concrete trail to follow, just the dirt trail that countless of feet had worn out. I smiled while looking up at the old oak tree ahead, loving the way the sun peaked out through the leaves. Looking down again, I stepped over the gnarled roots of the oak and gripped at the bark of the trunk before I froze and spun around.

I could have sworn that I heard something…my eyes scanned the forest around me but when nothing popped out and no bushes close by moved, I slowly faced back the direction I was heading, shaking of the uneasy feeling that crept in my stomach.

A sparrow flew over with a loud chirp, immediately pulling me from my worries. I loved being in the woods; everything was so green, so alive! There were always birds flying around, chirping and singing while they hopped from branch to branch.

Smiling slightly, I saw a flash of brown in the distance and the white tail of a retreating deer, which ran back to the others, who were still grazing and munching on the grass when they looked up, eying me warily.

A twig snapped to my right, making me stiffen before I slowly turned towards the source of the noise. A bush nearby was shaking, the leaves ruffling and quivering as the thing underneath them moved around. Opening my mouth, I took a deep breath to calm myself.

The leaves started to shake more violently, sending my heart in overdrive, accelerating with each passing second. Sudden movement and a deep-brown and black blotch flew at me as I felt paws press into my chest with force.

I stumbled backwards from the force of impact, a startled yelp escaping from my mouth before I tripped over a large root and I fell. My back connected with the dirt and grass rather harshly and the impact pushed a big breath out of my lungs.

Fear settled in as I opened my eyes, which had closed during the fall, only to see large brown eyes staring back at me, the body of the creature shaking furiously. I couldn’t open my mouth, not even to scream, cry or breath.
