Stefan was glad the school day was almost over. He wanted to get out of these crowded rooms and corridors, just for a few minutes.
So many minds. The pressure of so many thought patterns, so many mental voices surrounding him, was making him dizzy. It had been years since he had been in a swarm of people like this. One mind in particular, out from the others. She had been among those watching him in the main corridor of the school building. He didn't know what she looked like, but her personality was powerful. He felt sure he'd recognize it again.
So far, at least, he'd survived the first day of the masquerade. He'd used the Powers only twice, and then sparingly. But he was tired, and, he admitted ruefully, hungry. The rabbit hadn't been enough. Worry about that later. He found his last classroom and sat down. And immediately he felt the presence of that mind again. It glowed at the edge of his consciousness, a golden light, soft and yet vibrant. And, for the first time, he could locate the girl it was coming from. She was seated right in front of him. Even as he thought it, she turned around and he saw her face. It was all he could do not to gasp in shock. Katherine! But of course, it couldn't be. Katherine was dead; no one knew that better than he did.
Still, the resemblance was uncanny. That pale golden hair, so fair it almost seemed to shimmer. That creamy skin, which had always made him think of swans, or alabaster, flushing faintly pink over the cheekbones. And the eyes Katherine's eyes had been a colour he had never seen before; darker than sky blue, as rich as the lapis lazuli in her jewelled headband. This girl had those same eyes. And they were fixed directly on his as she smiled. He looked down from the smile quickly. Of all things, he did not want to think about Katherine. He didn't want to look at this girl who reminded him of her, and he didn't want to feel her presence any longer. But he couldn't stop looking at her and thinking about her. I must meet her and get to know her I thought.
The school day is over, and I thought I was following her home, but it was to the cemetery. I watch her as she writes in what looks like her diary, I keep on of those, and she is talking to someone. I decide to confront her. So, I walk up to her. "Hi" she jumps as I say it. "Hi sorry you frightened me."
"Oh, sorry I didn't mean to."
"It's ok I am easily spooked in this place." She says with a smile." Can I ask what are you doing here?"
"I am visiting, you?"
"same but you are stood on them." She says with a smile. I laugh and move off the grave. "I am sorry, and I am sorry for your loss."
"It's ok, thank you and I am fine."
"I didn't ask."
"Everyone has been asking me all day and I have gotten used to it now."
"But that is a lie."
"No, it is not."
"I meant that you are fine."
"You sore though that one then, nobody else has."
"It is obvious to someone who really pays attention."
"Thank you for paying attention." She smiles again which is beautiful.
"It's getting dark I will walk you home." She gets up off the floor and steps towards me. "That would be lovely." She smiles. We walk back to her house and on the way, we talk and tell each other about ourselves.
It has been a week since me and Stefan had a genuinely nice conversation all night long, the day after I broke up with Matt. I can't stop thinking about him and I don't know why. When I met him, I was sad and know I don't know something has changed.
I can't stop thinking about her. I want to stop because she reminds me of Kathrine, but I can't. I think I love Elena, but I have only talk to her for a day. I have let a week go by without talking to her. I think I am going to call her. Wait no I will text her or talk to her in person. I don't know what to do. My brain is about to explode. I am hungry I am going to find a bunny.
Ok so I am no longer hungry, and I have managed to decide on what to do about Elena. I am going to walk over to her house and talk to her like a man.
