Always together (Newtmas)

Chapter 6

"Which is a clear coalition of our rules here." Gally said.

Everyone was having a council meeting about Thomas, to see what should happen to him since he went into the Maze when he wasn't a runner.

"Yeah. But he saved Alby's life..." Frypan said. "Did he?" Gally said as he looked at Frypan. Thomas sighed.
This went on for another few minutes, until Thomas heard Gally say something. "This shank needs to be punished" the room went silent.

Newt sighed. "Minho, you were there with him, what do you think?" Newt asked looking at Minho.
"I think that all the time that we've been here, no one has ever killed a Griever before." Minho said. "As I trailed away and ran. This dumb shank" Minho said, nodding his head toward Thomas. "Stayed behind to help Alby." Minho paused. "I don't know if he's brave or stupid. But we need more of it."

"So what are you saying?" Newt asked.

"I say we make him a runner." Minho said confidently. Thomas looked up shocked by what Minho just said.
The room erupted into voices. Some of the boys agreeing with Minho, some of the boys against.

"Thomas, Thomas, Thomas, Thomas" Thomas heard Chuck say, trying to start a chant, his voice started to fade as no one was joining in on his chant.

Gally broke all the voices. "If you want to show this newbie a parade, that's fine. Go ahead. But one thing I do know about the maze is that you do not-"
His voice got cut off as a big sound sounded that made everyone go silent.

It sounded like the beeps that Thomas heard when he was coming up in the box. But it couldn't be the box right? Alby said it only comes up once a month.
Newt and Gally shared glances at eachother as everyone got up and ran out of the council hut.

Thomas got up and followed, he stopped Chuck while he was coming out. "Wait I know that sound..." Thomas started to say. "It's the box, it's coming back up!" Chuck said. "It shouldn't be." Minho said as he ran behind Thomas and Chuck.

Gally and Newt opened the metal doors. Thomas heard Newt jump down as Thomas pushed his way through the boys to look into the box.
"It's a girl..." Newt said.

It was silent between all the boys, some of them were in shock saying "how?" And "what?"
"I think she's dead." Newt said quietly. "What's in her hand?" Gally asked. Thomas watched as Newt bent down and pulled a piece of paper out of her hand that was in a fist, he opened it up and read it out.
"She's the last one..ever..." Newt said slowly looking up at the boys.

It was silent again, everyone was in shock and confusion looking at Newt.
"What the hell does that mean?" Newt asked with confusion breaking the silence.

Suddenly they heard a breath. From the girl.
Everyone's heads snapped to her, some of the boys gasping by the sudden gasp from her. The girl obviously wasn't dead. She was breathing heavily staring up at the boys. "Thomas" the girl said wide eyed, still breathing heavily once he notices Thomas.
Her heavy breathing slowly slowed down as she closed her eyes again.

All the boys' heads looked up from the girl, too Thomas, all their eyes on him. Thomas looked around all the boys that were staring at him. Thomas was so confused. He looked down to look at Newt and saw a hurt expression on Newt's face.

Newt's POV

Thomas left to go into the Maze again. Gally was furious. The girl was asleep in one of the beds still.
"Honestly, I don't know why we're talking about this." Gally said looking up at Newt as he sat down. "We don't have a choice. If Alby was here, you know he'd agree with me!" Gally said putting his arms out pointing outside.

Newt was dumbfounded, he sighed and looked over at Clint and Jeff.
"Clint, Jeff, how's he doing?" Newt asked them. Clint and Jeff looked at each other. Jeff looked back at Newt, "it's bad..he's getting worse..." Jeff said.

Newt sighed and looked down. He looked back up, "alright, just keep a eye on him alright?" Newt said, they nodded when Newt said that. They started to walk out but the door opened.

Minho walking in first, with all the others following him.
Gally stood up quickly, "Well, it's nice of you to join us. You boys enjoy your little field trip?" Gally said crossing his arms.

"What the hell Gally?" Minho said looking at Gally angrily. "You think you can call a keeper meeting without us?!"

Gally rolled his eyes. "Last time I checked the Greenie wasn't a keeper" Gally said pointing at Thomas and pointing at the door for him to go. "You mind waiting outside?" Gally said talking to Thomas.
Thomas looked down. Newt kept silent. "He stays!" Minho said sternly. Then he looked at Newt. "What's the point of all this?" Minho asked.

"We've got 2 hours until sundown, we've got to figure out what to do with Alby." Newt said. "You want to banish him?" Winston asked sadly.

"No. No one wants to do anything. No one wants to banish anyone, alright? But he's stung, we don't have a choice." Gally said.

"Yes we do." Thomas said sternly.
Gally looked at him shocked. "You say something Newbie?" Gally asked.

"Yeah, we have a choice, we don't have to banish Alby."

Gally looked at Newt then back at Thomas "Right, how's that exactly?" Gally asked.
Thomas grabbed something out of Minho's hand. "We found this." Thomas said as he put it into Newt's hand. "It was inside a Griever."
Newt looked down at the cylinder thing and saw the same letters that were stamped on all their supplies. "These are the letters that are on all our supplies."  Newt said confused.

"Yeah, obviously whoever put us here, made the grievers" Thomas said then paused. "This is the first real clue, the first anything you've found in three years. Right Minho?" Thomas said looking at Minho. "Right." Minho said agreeing with Thomas.

"Newt." Thomas said getting Newt's attention. "We've gotta go back out there." Thomas looked between Gally and Newt. "Who knows where this might lead us." Thomas said.

Newt looked over at Gally, Gally was doing an obvious face. "You see what he's trying to do right?" Gally said. Newt stayed silent. "First he breaks our rules, then he tries to convince them to abandon them totally?" Gally said. "The rules are the only thing that have ever held us together! Why are we now questioning them?" Gally asked basically yelling.

Thomas was scared. He didn't know if Newt would go on his side.

"If Alby was here, you know he'd agree with me. And this shank." Gally said pointing at Thomas "needs to be punished."

Newt looked away from Gally and looked at Thomas. Newt saw a pleading look in Thomas' eyes.
Newt looked away and looked at Minho and gave 'the key' back. "You're right. Thomas broke the rules." Newt said while giving it back. "One night in the pit and no food." Newt said.

Gally sighed angrily, "oh come on Newt! One night in the pit?! You think that will stop him from going into the Maze?" Gally said angrily.

"No." Newt said sternly, "and we can't just have no runners running into the Maze, whenever they feel like it." Thomas nodded when Newt said that while Gally crossed his arms and looked at Newt waiting for him to say something.

"So let's just make this official." Newt said looking at Thomas. "Starting from tomorrow, your a runner. Thomas was shocked while Minho nodded smiling slightly and looked at Gally with a 'I told you' face.

"Wow." Gally said shocked and angry by what Newt just said as he started to walk out. "Gally-" Frypan said, stopping Gally. "Nah Fry." Gally said pushing Frypan's hand away and Gally still walked out angrily. Frypan followed Gally out.

Thomas was watching Gally and Frypan look out, he looked back at Newt. Their eyes locked. "Thanks Newt..." Thomas said quietly. Newt still looked at him, their eyes still locked, then he looked down a bit and nodded and looked to the side.
