"Let's see, there's tenement housing" the Captain said as he pointed out a sign. The family had tried to learn some basic English before they arrived and the Captain and Brigitta had a grip of it the best."Yes, uh you see I have housing arranged already so I should probably find that. Would you like to meet up tomorrow to discuss?" Dr. Wasner asked
"Sure" Maria agreed and after salutations the man and family parted ways.
They found an opening in a worn down apartment. It was on the third floor of an 8 story building and had a fire escape out of the back that connected to all the other tenants' places. It was dingy, and had a kitchenette and a dirty table. There was a large room with two beds and a smaller one with only one bed. The children were going to have to share a room and the boys were going to have to sleep on the floor that was covered in dust and dead cockroaches.
"Not exactly a palace" Liesl mumbled next to Brigitta.
"You could say that again" her little sister agreed
"So where exactly are we going to sleep?" Kurt asked innocently
Maria just looked at the boys and they understood. "You two share" Maria looked at the two oldest girls "the other three share as well, we have the basket for Johanna" Maria explained.
"Mother this doesn't seem like an ideal place for children" Louisa said
"Its the best we can do" the captain walked over to his daughter and hugged her "just stay calm, we'll figure something else out" he sighed.
"Go get unpacked" Liesl suggested to the rest of the kids
"I call the side, I do not want to be in the middle" Brigitta ran into the bedroom.
"Neither do I" Marta followed
"Wait for me" Gretl chased her sisters.
The older four looked at their parents with concern as Maria sat down at the table and placed her head in her hands. Friedrich was holding Johanna and she began to cry.
"I feel as if I've failed, I thought this was a good idea and now we're worse off than before" she began to tear up a little, filled with fear of the future.
"Don't worry we'll figure it out" the captain placed his hands on her shoulders and kissed the top of her head, trying to maintain his own composure in front of the children.
"Friedrich and I will get jobs for the time being and I'm sure Mr. Samish can find at least one venue to get us started at." The captain offered
"But who knows how long that will be" Louisa added only to be nudged by Liesl's elbow. Johanna was finally put down and toddled into the room with the younger girls.
"Georg, we have another one on the way, what are we going to do?" Maria squeezed one of his hands that still rested on her shoulder.
"When have you ever been out of ideas?" Liesl sat by Maria "You always figure out something"
"Exactly, it just might take longer than usual" Friedrich assured his mother and in response he received a smile. Maria felt a bit more at peace knowing her children had faith in her.
"They're right, if you can figure out how to make me stop whistling for my children then you can solve anything" the captain smiled to try and keep her spirits up when in reality he was the most anxious of all.
"Ok girls come here" he spoke into the other room but then directed to the group around him "we need to pool money"
Maria put a few bills and coins on the table and the captain put a bit more. Liesl had one bill and Kurt had two. The rest of the children put in a few coins each but Marta and Gretl each only had one.
