"Oh, ok" Maria sighed. Dr. Wasner was already there thankfully and had been listening to the audience.
"How can you say ok?" He asked Maria "we don't have enough planned"
"We'll sing ummm...oh Susanna. We learned that one and we can do some of our stuff we did in Salzburg and say its folk and the kids know Old Black Joe" The Captain clapped and pointed at Dr. Wasner.
The audience had heard through the grapevine that the family could do more than choral and Wasner had heard through the curtain that many people were anticipating that kind of new performance.
"That's a lot of people" Liesl sighed
"The most we've had" Brigitta bit her lip
"It'll be fine" Friedrich said looking through a rip in the curtain "just pretend they aren't all there"
"Children!" Maria rushed to join them "we're not going to sing our usual set"
"We're not?" Louisa asked
"What will we sing?" Gretl added
"You know everything Dr. Wasner will announce but we've sang all this before. The audience doesn't want choral"
"Great!" Kurt exclaimed
The program began. Johanna sat with Carl off stage and the basket now held a sleeping Rupert.
The family sang anything they knew: Do re mi, they even sang Jagdlied. Brigitta got to play her recorder for Wenn Alle Brunlein. The Captain played the piano for Old Black Joe and Friedrich joined him on the violin. Then Maria got her guitar and led Oh Susanna which the audience adored. They concluded with so long farewell.
The audience roared with applause and the next few weeks produced the same response. The people preferred this new sound of the Von Trapp Family and crowds flooded to hear them. Harris was more than pleased and Mrs. Hammerfield had even heard the good news that the family was doing well.
The continued the tour along the coast to circle back to New York. They were sad to be done and wished they could retreat to Vermont but the family needed rest, especially Rupert and Maria.

The Captain had agreed to meet with Harris to discuss future deals and brought Dr. Wasner and the boys along with him.
"So you see Mr. Trapp, you could do a Midwestern tour by the holidays and then begin a pre summer program right here."
Georg sighed and rubbed his temple. He truly enjoyed what he did. His family liked singing, but touring all year round, with 7 kids and 2 babies? It was overwhelming for him, a grown man. He looked over at Friedrich and Kurt who sat off to the side, trying their best to understand the English that passed between the men. Friedrich was 16, he needed to start thinking about university, or if he even wanted to go. Kurt needed to enjoy his teenage years, they were so precious and he already had 4 years of his childhood robbed from him in Austria. No, his sons, his children all deserved better than this.
"What if we just toured during the summer months. We could do the coast again or the Midwest" Georg proposed
Harris was taken aback "why wouldn't you want to tour all year long? You are going to become household names at this rate. I'm talking Television shows, interviews, galas, premieres"
"That's nice but Rupert isn't even 3 months old and some of my little girls are still so young and we're not capable of schooling the older-"
"They'll be able to hire private tutors. You could get a proper tour bus, leave the other one parked outside of wherever you perform tk draw a crowd. The kids are adored by everyone-"
"But it's not fair to them" The Captain placed a hand gently on the dark desk. Mr. Harrid leaned back in his rolling chair and plopped the cigar back in his mouth
"You must tour at least 5 summers, and during that time agree to interviews. However, other events will be discussed later. That's the best I can offer you" Harris proposed
"Deal" the Captain stood up and shook Mr. Harris' hand. Just then the receptionist walked in holding a check and handed it to Harris.
"That is the check for the tour minus my cut. We are aware of hoe you use it so be wise" Harris carefully handed the check to the Captain who kissed it. The boys got up to read the number over their father's shoulders.
